> SOUTHERN INDIANA — The New Washington boys’ basketball team snapped an 11-game losing streak against Lanesville, beating the Eagles 61-51 on the road Friday.

The Mustangs’ victory was the first over the Eagles since a 73-63 triumph at Lanesville during New Wash’s only regional championship season in 2001.

“It was a big win, to say the least,” Mustangs coach Jonathan May said. “Tonight is the best we’ve played all year. It’s February — less than a month from the sectional — when you really want to be playing your best basketball.”

The win puts New Wash at 3-1 in the Southern Athletic Conference. The Mustangs can do no worse than tie for second place in the conference, which Borden has already clinched.

“Our goal at the beginning of the season was to win the conference,” May said. “With Borden [having wrapped it up], we wanted to win out and reach the goal of finishing second in the conference.”

After turning the ball over 29 times in a 66-40 loss to Switzerland County in its last outing — its third straight defeat — New Wash turned it over just 14 times against Lanesville.

May gave the credit to senior point guard Adan Diaz.

“Diaz did a tremendous job tonight handling the basketball,” May said. “He never lost his composure and never panicked. He did a great job of running the team tonight. We talked about limiting our turnovers and offensive rebounding and we did both tonight.”

New Washington’s Wesley Napier and Ian Hughes led all scorers with 14 points apiece. They were joined in double figures by teammates Tim Cochran (13) and Diaz (12), who hit 10 of his 11 free throws. The Mustangs were 25-of-27 from the charity stripe on the night.

“As a group, everyone pulls their own weight,” May said.

Lanesville (9-8, 2-2 SAC) was led by Alex Ansman and Kevin Zollman, who scored 12 points each.

• Hornets fall short of first win: Henryville played Crothersville closer than any opponent this season, but the Hornets fell short, 58-53 on Friday.

“I thought we battled every possession,” Henryville coach Dan Carmony said. “We just didn’t get some plays down the stretch. I was pleased with the effort tonight. We’re going to get there.”

Tyler Collins had a game-high 21 points for Henryville. Cody Reister and Elijah Weeks added 10 points apiece for the Hornets, who outscored the Tigers 13-8 in the second quarter and 21-18 in the fourth.

Crothersville (7-9, 1-3 SAC) was led by Gene Hodge’s 16 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

• Hornets win at Crawford County: On Thursday, three Henryville players scored in double figures in the Hornets’ 59-36 victory at Crawford County.

Haley Huddleston led Henryville with 14 points, while teammate Emma Hendricks chipped in 11. The Hornets’ Lesha Dallas scored 10 and Emily Hollis added nine.

“We had a good night offensively. It was nice to see several girls step up and have a balanced scoring attack,” Henryville coach Josh Conrad said. “Our defense in the third quarter was really good. We just lost them on two [3-pointers] late in the quarter. One thing we need to work on is finishing those quarters off, but we played a pretty good game overall.”
