NORTH VERNON —
Free throws proved to be the deciding factor as the Jeffersonville Red Devils basketball team fell to Jennings County 46-41 in overtime in North Vernon on Saturday.
Outscored from the line by 17 points, including five key free throws during the overtime, Jeffersonville couldn’t hold off the determined Panthers.
Jeff is 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Hoosier Hills Conference after consecutive losses. The Panthers are 3-1 with three straight wins.
“We didn’t do our job and they took it to us,” Devil coach Matt Pait said. “Jennings County wanted it more. They played a great game and deserved to win.”
With six seconds left in regulation, Jeff freshman Taylor Sykes hit a jumper in the lane to tie the game at 41 points each.
Aggressive defense from Jeffersonville held Jennings County as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
Jennings County sophomore Baylee Krueger made three of her four shots from the line in overtime and Panther senior Kirsten Biggs added two more free throws as Jennings outscored Jeff 5-0 in overtime.
Jeffersonville struggled with shot selection in overtime, forcing shots and being out-rebounded by the Panthers.
“Heart, toughness, focus … those are the reasons we lost this game. We have to work on being ready to play,” Pait said. “We didn’t lose because of what happened on the floor. We lost because of what’s inside.”
Senior guard Nichole Midgett led the Devils with 12 points. Junior Haley Vogen added 10 points for Jeff.
The Red Devils next host Madison on Friday.
