HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: No. 3 Floyd Central rolls past Red Devils, 5-0

Henryville’s Embry shoots school-record 30

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Floyd Central girls’ tennis team bounced back from a lackluster effort against Louisville Assumption on Monday with a convincing 5-0 victory over host Jeffersonville on Tuesday.

“I told James, my assistant, tonight, ‘We looked better in warm-up tonight than we did all night the night before,” Floyd Central coach Rick Miller said. “The effort was definitely there. The kids performed at a pretty high level tonight.”

“I thought Floyd Central did a great job against us tonight,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly said. “You can tell why they are ranked third in the state. It is good for our team to get to play someone of this caliber.”

In singles action, Floyd Central’s Olivia Boesing defeated Morgan Reilly at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Carmen Schreiber knocked off the Red Devils’ Julianna Jenks at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3, while the Highlanders’ Dana Frank beat Emily Lewis at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.

“I thought Julianna Jenks did an excellent job at the No. 2 spot,” Reilly said. “There were a lot of games that could have gone her way, too. She competed very well on a high level.”

The Highlanders were equally tough at the doubles positions. At the No. 1 spot, Floyd Central’s Katherine Dauby and Whitney Batliner downed Maddy Coulter and Larissa Neville, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2, Chelsea Shackelford and Kadey Welch turned back Jeff’s Rachel Williams and Kaitlin Wunsch, 6-2, 6-0.

Floyd Central travels to Bedford to meet Terre Haute South today. Jeffersonville travels to Jennings County on Thursday.

• Pirates oust CAI: Charlestown won both of its doubles matches to claim a 4-1 win at Christian Academy of Indiana.

At No. 1 doubles, the Pirate tandem of Emily Shaw and Erica Broady knocked off Tamar Kelly and Emily Mitchell, 6-1, 6-0. At two doubles, Charlestown’s Bailey Masingo and Hayley Trinkle downed Kacie Arrell and Callie Allison, 6-3, 6-3.

In singles action, the Pirates’ Sarah Trotter needed three sets to beat the Warriors’ Courtney Heishman at the No. 2 position, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Charlestown No. 3 singles player Marissa Knoebel won her match by forfeit.

“Sarah Trotter moved up to the No. 2 singles spot today and pulled out a nice three-set win,” Pirates’ head coach Chris Ryan said. “Bailey and Hayley made the necessary adjustments to their preferred style of play to keep their match from going to three sets at the No. 2 doubles spot.”

CAI’s lone point came at No. 1 singles, where Rachel Jones defeated Charlestown’s Sabine Higazy, 7-5, 6-4.

The Pirates will play Providence on Thursday at Community Park in New Albany. The Warriors will host Crawford County on Thursday.

• Clarksville gets first win: Clarksville put an end to its season-long losing streak with a 4-1 victory over North Harrison on Tuesday.

“I feel like the girls are learning how to compete,” Clarksville coach Steve Welcher said. “North Harrison is a pretty good team. A week ago, we would have probably lost. I hope this is a start of us putting it together — we will see.”

Clarksville won all three singles matches. At No. 1 singles, Chloe Stephens put away Maddie Jones, 6-3, 7-5. Jackie Slaten defeated Allison Goldman, 6-4, 6-3, while Tesia Jenkins downed Alison Sieg, 6-4, 6-0.

Clarksville’s fourth point came at No. 2 doubles, where Sharon Garcia and Abigail Hurtgen fended off Sierra Bliss and Kaylee Nordhoff in a 6-0, 7-5 triumph.

Clarksville hosts Eastern on Thursday.

BOYS’ GOLF

• Embry shines at Hidden Creek:
Henryville’s Evan Embry shot a near-perfect game on the Links Nine course at Hidden Creek Golf Club on Tuesday to lead the Hornets to a victory over Charlestown and Lanesville.

Embry carded a school-record, 5-under-par 30 through nine holes to help the Hornets post a team score of 160. Embry made six birdies and only one bogey.

“Even though that’s a little easier course than we normally play, you’ve got to get the ball in the hole,” Henryville head coach Robin Embry said about Evan Embry’s effort. “He expects to shoot more rounds under par.”

The next-best score of any team also came from the victors, as Mitchell Fields turned in a 39.

Rounding out Henryville scores were Cody Gray with a 41, Cameron Furnish with a 51 and Bailey Reister with a 50.

“All the kids continue to improve,” said Coach Embry, who mentioned that his players went out and played another nine holes after Tuesday’s match to get ready for Saturday’s Old Capital Invitational in Corydon. “They’re working at it and they are a fun group to coach.”

Charlestown placed third in the meet with a team score of 175, four strokes behind Lanesville. Clayton Terry stroked a 41 to lead the way for the Pirates.

Also for Charlestown, Tyler Jackson stroked a 43, Luke Watson hit a 44 and Chris Braun shot a 47.

“This was our best team score of the year, so we’re getting there a few strokes at a time, especially with a few guys out,” Charlestown coach Adam Tolliver said. “But when you go up against a guy like (Evan) Embry, it’s going to be tough for you.”

Charlestown will face off against Floyd Central and Clarksville at Valley View Golf Club on Thursday. Henryville will play Borden and Silver Creek in the West Clark Shootout at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Memphis, also on Thursday.

SOFTBALL

• Floyd Central knocks off Seymour:
Floyd Central responded to a 1-0 deficit through two innings with nine runs in the top of the third and fourth innings and held on for a 12-6 victory at Seymour on Tuesday.

“The girls came with a focus today that I haven’t seen in a while,” Floyd coach Joe Witten said. “They were swinging at good pitches, making solid contact and hitting the ball extremely hard. I think they’re playing with a purpose.”

Kallie Krammes led the Highlanders at the plate with a 4-for-4 performance. She knocked two doubles, scored three runs and drove in four.

“She played about as perfect as you can, offensively,” Witten said. “She got on base and made it very difficult for Seymour to put a zero up on the board.”

Also for Floyd Central, Taylor Batliner was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Harper was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, as was Samantha Feather.

The Highlanders’ Morgan Harper pitched six innings to earn victory, upping her record to 6-0. She allowed just one run, striking out four and walking none. The only run allowed was a home-run ball in the second inning.

Class 4A No. 9 Floyd Central (16-2) will host Providence on Friday.

BASEBALL

• Kissel, Generals clobber Henryville: Senior Drew Kissel blasted a pair of solo home runs to lead visiting Clarksville past Henryville in a make-up game on Tuesday, 11-4.

Kissel launched his first homer in a three-run third inning. He followed that up with his second one-run blast in a three-run fourth. Kissel wound up going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Five other Generals (6-9) had two hits in Nathaniel Jones, Jeremy Noe, Tanner Wallace, Wes Rittman and Brandon Hardin. Clarksville collected 14 hits as a team.

Rittman earned the victory on the mound, upping his record to 2-0. In a starting role, the senior pitched five innings as he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits. Rittman struck out eight and walked four.

“We just needed a win — period,” Generals’ head coach Chris Kane said. “It’s been awhile since we’ve scored some runs.”

Henryville’s Joey Martin was the losing pitcher, dropping his record to 1-4. The Hornets (6-7) committed five errors.

“It was another lackluster effort on our part,” Henryville head coach Jeff Schroeder said. “Our defensive effort was about equivalent to about a 9- or 10-year-old Little League team. It was terrible. I mean, routine plays — pop-ups, grounders — we just kicked them around at terrible times. So a terrible effort today.”

Clarksville will travel to Class 4A No. 7 New Albany tonight. The Hornets will host Lanesville in a key Southern Athletic Conference contest on Thursday.

• Floyd Central falls to St. X: Floyd Central matched St. Xavier (Ky.) hit-for-hit, but the production fell short in a 6-1 loss at home on Tuesday.

The Highlanders and Tigers each had five hits in the contest, but two of St. X’s hits went for extra bases, while Floyd Central had all singles.

Jordan Thompson fell to 0-3 with the loss on the mound for the Highlanders.

Floyd Central (5-7) travels to Jeffersonville today.
