CORYDON —
Silver Creek seniors Haley Garr, Alex Carlton and Sammi Smith accomplished almost everything they set out to accomplish the last four seasons — except beat Brownstown Central.
The Braves won their 13th straight sectional title with a 25-16, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22 win over Silver Creek to take the Class 3A Corydon Sectional crown on Saturday.
“Our kids played their hearts out,” Dragons coach Jeff Zimmerman said. “I couldn’t be proud of the players or the coaching staff. Brownstown is a great team.”
Fourth-ranked Brownstown, which swept Salem earlier in the day, hosts Batesville in the Jasper Regional first round on Tuesday.
No. 12 Silver Creek, which saw its season end with a 20-14 mark, as led by Garr’s 10 kills and three aces in her final outing as a Dragon. Smith had 26 assists and Carlton finished with 19 digs. All four marks led the team.
“We will miss our three seniors immensely,” Zimmerman said. “Their leadership and commitment to the program was second-to-none throughout their careers.”
Also for the Dragons, Liz Mann had 10 kills and Danni Densford and Morgan Reining added seven in the championship match. Kendra Kirchgessner had a team-best seven blocks and Kaitlyn Ramser contributed with nine assists.
Silver Creek advanced to the championship game with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 win over the host Panthers in Saturday morning’s sectional semifinal.
