H.S. ROUNDUP: Charlestown wins third straight, 44-34

No. 6 Madison holds off Dragons, 74-64

CHARLESTOWN — Charlestown won its third straight game, including two in a row in the Mid-Southern Conference after an 0-4 start, with a 44-34 win over Eastern on Tuesday.

The Pirates were led by Kaitlynn Henning, who had a game-high 17 points. Megan Brooks added 10 points and Justice Burdin and Taylor Thrasher scored five apiece for Charlestown.

After leading 13-9 after one quarter and 20-18 at intermission, the Pirates outscored the Musketeers 10-5 in the third quarter to take a 30-23 advantage into the final period.

After opening the season 2-7, including a five-game losing streak, Charlestown has won four of its last five games.

• No. 6 Madison holds off Dragons, 74-64: After trailing by 15 points early in the fourth quarter, Silver Creek got without four points and had the ball late, but Madison held off the Dragons to improve to 12-2 with a 74-64 victory on Tuesday.

“We dug ourselves a hole, but we fought back,” Silver Creek coach Scott Schoen said. “We just clawed back. We continue to claw back.”

Madison, which led 50-36 after the third quarter, had 10 different players scored, led by Hannah Cain’s 18. Mackey Heckox (14) and Alex Thurnall (10) joined Cain in double-figures.

“They have six or seven who can really score,” Schoen said. “We had to pick up the pace a little. It started off a little slow, but then it just exploded. It turned into an up and down marathon.”

Alex Tinsley led the Dragons with 22 points. Emily Clayton, who scored just four in Saturday’s 47-29 win at Salem, hit four 3-pointers and finished with 19.

“She shot the ball well,” Schoen said of Clayton. She started looking for her shot and taking it. That gives Alex and Kelsi [Scott] and Casie [Toby] a shot to get to the offensive boards.”

The two teams combined to shoot 60 free throws. The victorious Cubs went 30-for-42, including 20-of-28 in the fourth quarter, while Creek was 23-of-28 for the contest.

Madison is 12-2 for the first time since 1997.

The Dragons have a big Mid-Southern Conference game Saturday at home against Austin. Both teams are 5-1 in the MSC, a half-game behind leader Scottsburg.

NEXT: Silver Creek (10-5, 5-1 MSC) hosts Austin (11-3, 5-1), Saturday.
