HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Generals tame New Washington, 76-51

CLARKSVILLE — The Clarksville Generals turned out what coaches from both sides agreed was their best effort of the season, defeating the New Washington Mustangs, 76-51.

“It was by far the best we’ve shared the basketball, by far the best that we have scrambled in our defense, by far the best effort as a team this year,” Clarksville assistant coach Jim Matthews said. “I’m very pleased with our chemistry tonight and the sharing of the basketball.”

The Generals used their superior size to outrebound the Mustangs 36-17, with freshman guard Aidan McEwen leading the way with 10. McEwen finished the night with 16 points to earn the double-double.

“That’s the best I’ve seen Clarksville play,” New Washington coach Jonathan Mays said. “They shot the ball well and got too many second-chance opportunities.”

Including McEwen, four Generals finished in double figures, led by sophomore guard Billy Edelen with 18, who had four baskets from 3-point range. Junior forward Cory Brown scored 10 and sophomore forward Wes Rittman finished with 13.

“I thought the play of all of our guys was outstanding,” Clarksville head coach Scott Matthews said. “We can build on wins like this.”

Early in the first quarter, New Washington attempted to use a full-court press to force turnovers, but Clarksville was able to move the ball behind the press to get early points from Brown. The Mustangs eventually abandoned the press, favoring a half-court defense.

“We had three guys that had two fouls at the end of the first half,” May said. “I thought we were giving up too many lay-ups, so we tried to pull back and stopped creating some offense for them.”

Clarksville needed little help creating offense from the Mustangs, and did no favors in return in the third quarter, holding the Mustangs to just four points.

“I thought we got after them a little bit and increased the tempo,” Scott Matthews said. “The last couple weeks, they’re starting to play a lot better.”

Matthews pointed out the youth of his team, and said he expects the Generals to continue to improve.

The Generals head to Switzerland County to play the 12-2 Pacers. The Generals get just one practice to fix the mistakes made against Clarksville, May said.

“Overall, as a group, we’re just hoping for things to happen,” May said. “We’re hoping that we’ll win, instead of taking the mentality that you’re not going to let anyone stand in your way. You’ve got to be determined. When you miss a couple shots, you can’t lose faith in yourself.”
