JEFFERSONVILLE —
Jeffersonville’s football team, which is coming off of a four-game improvement from the 2010 season, has a motto for the 2012 off-season: “Any time, any place, anywhere.”
Jeff has played seven 7-on-7 tournaments, six 11-on-11 tourney, from as close as Clarksville and Charlestown to as far as Breathitt County in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.
“We’ve been everywhere,” said Lonnie Oldham, who took Jeff from a one-win season in 2010 to 5-5 a year ago in his first season in charge of the program. “We’ve played a lot of different competition, so I think we’ll be ready when the season starts.”
Jeff has faced state powers like Indianapolis Pike and Crown Points, as well as a trip to New Palestine.
“We’ve competed pretty well. It has been a pretty productive summer with some quality reps,” Oldham evaluated.
Although the numbers are down — Oldham expects about 60 varsity players, along with 30 freshman — the quality of this year’s summer over last year’s has improved drastically, Oldham said.
“I think [90 total players] is a little low,” Oldham admitted. “I don’t know why, but the ones that are out there are committed to the program and want to be out there. Our boys have been working real hard. That’s the key. ”
Oldham said there are no changes from last year when it comes to offense, defense or team philosophy. There will be some differences in the offense, though, based up on the graduation of quarterback Dalton Conway.
Tyler Fridley is expected to be the starter with Jordan Lacy as the backup. Both seinor signal callers have different skill sets than Conway did.
“The only change is that we have a change at quarterback. Every year when you have a change at quarterback, you have to change the offense to fit his skills.”
The biggest improvement Oldham expects is on the offensive and defensive lines, despite a lack of experience.
“We have four new lineman and the four we’ve got probably is not experienced, but they’re better [than last year’s line],” OIdham said. “That’s what I’m most excited about, that we’ll be better up front.”
