“This is a good tournament for us,” Dragons’ assistant coach Terry Purlee said. “Playing against New Albany is a challenge for us. Anytime you can win over a Class 4A school, it’s always good.”

The Bulldogs ended up 1-1 on the day with an 11-1 triumph over Trinity Lutheran in five innings.

Hannah Veit was the only New Albany player to have a multihit game, going 2-for-4 with five RBIs.

Bulldog freshman McKenzie Gill got the victory on the mound. She tossed all five frames, allowing one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Silver Creek (8-3) and New Albany (5-4) will both be on the road on Monday. The Dragons will visit Austin, while the Bulldogs will face Charlestown.

BASEBALL

• Pioneers cruise past Southwestern: A solid complete-game performance by starting pitcher Andrew Hunt and 17 hits from its offense enabled Providence to defeat Southwestern on Saturday, 8-1.

“It all starts with Andrew. That was the best performance I’ve seen from him,” Pioneers’ head coach Scott Hornung said. “We got some key hits in certain situations.”

Providence (5-2) will host Louisville Southern on Monday.

• Highlanders fall at Lawrence Central: Visiting Floyd Central suffered an 8-6 loss at Lawrence Central on Saturday. The game was called after five innings because of rain.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Jeff, NA lose Triple Dual matches: On Friday, Jeffersonville and New Albany each lost their respective openers in the Jeff Triple Dual. The tournament matches on Saturday were postponed because of rain.

The Red Devils lost to Castle on Friday, 4-1. Jeff’s lone point came at No. 1 doubles, where junior Macy Lancaster and sophomore Emily Lewis defeated the Knights’ Allison Mann and Katie Brookman, 7-6(8-6), 6-1.

Along with lauding the effort of Lancaster and Lewis, Jeff head coach Mark Reilly praised his top two singles players in Morgan Reilly and Julianna Jenks. Each player lost in three sets.

“We lost a tough match to Castle,” Coach Reilly said. “Two of the four losses were in three sets. I was pleased with our No. 1 doubles of Macy Lancaster and Emily Lewis. Both of them did a great job of raising their game as the match went on and then sustained it for the rest of the evening. Both our No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles battled for nearly three hours before losing in the third set, so I’m pleased with the effort of those two.”

New Albany suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 19 Columbus North in its tournament opener.

Losing for the Bulldogs in singles action were Maddy Bellew, Katie Collins and Anne Mattox. New Albany’s No. 1 doubles team of Emily Hoffer and Peyton Wells and its two doubles tandem of Lauren Hoffer and Chandni Bhimani each fell in straight sets.

The Red Devils and the Bulldogs will make up their Triple Dual match at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Jeff.
