Generals, Mustangs can’t overcome cold shooting in respective setbacks

MADISON — Providence led from the start in Tuesday’s 51-25 victory over Madison Shawe. The win was the Pioneers’ third in four games.

The Pioneers led 27-17 at the half and 34-22 after three quarters then pulled away with a 17-3 fourth quarter.

Meredith Endris led Providence with a game-high 17 points, including the Pioneers’ only two three-pointers and 7-of-10 from the foul line.

“She’s capable of that,” Providence coach Brad Burden said his senior leader. “She’s our best offensive player. She can score off the dribble and hit the three. We’re going to need her to do that.”

Lillian Hughes had 13 points, Taylor Smallwood finished with four points and a Providence-best nine rebounds and Michaela Hoke scored two points and had seven steals.

Freshman Marlee Karem added eight points as her role continues to increase for the Pioneers.

“She’s a very talented freshman,” Burden said. “We’re excited to see her have a big night. We’re trying to fit her more into the rotation every night. She’s someone we’re excited about.”

Providence out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 25-20.

• Generals fall to Trinity Lutheran: Clarksville’s defense came to play, but its offense struggled to score. The result was a 49-31 home loss to Trinity Lutheran on Tuesday.

“I felt we played really good defense,” Generals coach B.D. Ledbetter said. “We just struggled getting the ball in the hole and Trinity (1-0) shot well when they needed it.”

Courtney Holmes led Clarksville with 10 points. Gabby Evans added nine and Haley Jenkins eight for the Generals.

• Mustangs drops first game: New Washington managed to hit just 19 of 73 shots (26 percent) in its first loss of the season, 63-45 at Austin on Tuesday.

Caroline Rick led New Washington with 11 points and 25 rebounds as the as the Mustangs out-rebounded Austin 59-38. Ashley Johnson added 10 points and six boards, while Kriston Sarver and Courtney Amick added nine apiece. Amick also had eight rebounds and three assists.

The Eagles’ Jessie Davidson led all scorers with 26 points. She also had eight boards in the victory, which was Austin’s opener.
