> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Coari Robertson’s excellent offensive performance helped keep New Washington near the top of the Southern Athletic Conference in its 4-3 home win over Henryville on Wednesday.

“It was a big win. It’s always big when you beat Henryville,” New Washington coach Tim Sexton said. “... We’re just hitting the ball well. Our pitchers have been doing a good job.”

Robertson muscled a two-run home run over the left-feld wall in the game’s first inning to give the Mustangs the lead, and padded it with an RBI double in the next inning. Roberston finished 2-for-3 for the day.

Kaira Doherty got credit for the win, going 3 2/3 innings and striking out five. Whitney Morris went the rest of the way, sending back seven Henryville batters.

New Washington (9-6, 3-1 SAC) extended its winning streak to seven with the victory.

The Mustangs host Rock Creek Community Academy on Monday.

• Charlestown edges Providence: After nearly giving the game away defensively, Charlestown recovered to take a 5-4 win over Providence in eight innings at home on Wednesday.

“It was unfortunate — we’d have an out, but then we’d make an error which would allow them to stay in the game,” Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman said. “We’ve got to improve on that.”

Providence only mustered three hits in the game, but six Charlestown errors helped keep the Pioneers in the game.

Charlestown’s potent offense got 10 hits in the contest. Alex Hutchinson and Shelby Goedeker each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Alyssa Price was 2-for-4 with a triple.

Alli Webster pitched all eight innings to get the Charlestown victory, striking out 11 batters. She walked three Pioneers.

“Alli was strong most of the game, other than giving up three walks,” Zollman said. “Of course, you get frustrated when your teammates make well, but I thought she handled it well.”

Charlestown (11-3) hosts Austin, while Providence (8-9) travels to Henryville. Both games are today.



BASEBALL

• Providence falls in extras: Down 7-5 headed into the home seventh, Providence was able to muster two runs and force an extra inning, but it couldn’t stop visiting North Harrison from winning, 9-7 on Wednesday.

Despite the loss, Providence coach Scott Hornung saw plenty to like in his team’s performance.

“I’m feeling encouraged, actually,” Hornung said. “I thought our guys worked hard tonight. They’ve been working hard. We’ve hit a little rough road right here, but their work ethic is excellent. But we can’t just be satisfied with coming close, as we told them.”

Providence racked up 12 hits in the contest.

“It’s part of the game that needs to come along,” Hornung said. “Pitchers on our staff probably feel a little pressured because we haven’t just been putting up big numbers or big-hit games. So the thing that was encouraging was, we got hits from a lot of different people tonight, so it wasn’t just one or two people accumulating three hits, and that’s good to see.”

Reliever Ben Shahroudi took the loss in his first decision of the year after surrendering the deciding Cougar runs in the eighth inning. Brenden Popson gave up six runs in the starting role.

Providence (7-7) travels to Crawford County on Monday.  

• Charlestown wins at Madison: Charlestown built a quick 4-0 lead through two innings and worked through some trouble defensively to defeat host Madison on Tuesday, 7-4.

“A good road win tonight,” Charlestown coach Ricky Romans said. “We got off to a good start offensively, and our pitchers worked through some jams.”

The game-winning run came off of the bat of Ryan Gorbandt, who led off the third inning with a solo home run to center field to make the score 5-1 Pirates. Charlestown put up two more runs in the following inning to give itself an insurmountable 7-1 lead.

Ryan Jones went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored for Charlestown, while Gorbandt also finished 2-for-4.

Freshman pitcher Drew Reich got the win, improving his record to 3-2.

Charlestown (11-4) travels to Clarksville today.

• New Albany wallops Clarksville: New Albany needed just five innings to put away Clarksville at Mt. Tabor Field on Wednesday, 10-0.

Jordan Striegel pitched all five innings of the one-hit shutout, striking out 10 and walking none. The only hit he surrendered was to the first Clarksville batter of the game.

“Jordan did a nice job pitching today,” New Albany coach Chris McIntyre said. “Our offense continues to look a little bit better.”

Garrett Sherrell had a home run and two RBI in the win. Also for the Bulldogs, Eric Burnett was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks, Logan Striegel was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Tucker Marcum was 2-for-4 and Jordan Striegel knocked in two runs.

New Albany (13-2) plays a split doubleheader in Evansville against Bosse and North on Friday. Clarksville (6-10) hosts Mid-Southern Conference rival Charlestown today.



BOYS’ GOLF

• Borden wins at Chariot Run: Borden picked up a 200-207 victory over South Central at Chariot Run on Tuesday.

“Considering the conditions, windy and wet, we didn’t turn in a team score to the players’ liking, although I thought Jared Cook played well,” Borden coach Tony Wagoner said. “The others expressed disappointment in their scores and are determined to turn it around (today) wen we play Henryville and Silver Creek at Champions Pointe. We have taken a different approach to the way we practice and I hope to see the results of this change in the very near future.”

Rock Creek Community Academy’s team was at the meet, but did not field enough golfers to post a team score. The Lions’ Brett Casteler was the medalist with a 46.

For Borden, Jared Cook posted the best score with a 47. Matt Smith and Jesse McCombs each turned in a 50. Tony Wagoner III had a 53, and T.J. Fraley scored a 58.



GIRLS’ TRACK

• New Albany defeats Jeff: New Albany got the best of Jeffersonville in a dual meet on Tuesday, 80-56.

New Albany won two of the three relays, with the 400-meter relay ending in a tie. Each team ran it in 50.9 seconds.

For New Albany, Phoebe Bauer won both the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600-meter run. Claire Hirsch won the high jump, Temple Ricke took first in the 300-meter low hurdles and Essence Simmons had the best throw in the discus.

Jeffersonville got first-place finishes from Maddy Whitman (pole vault), Nycia Ford (100 hurdles, shot put), Chelsea Lewis (400), Taylor Hines (800), and LaVada Roberson (100, 200, long jump).

Jeffersonville is slated to compete in the Eastern Relays this weekend. New Albany hosts Seymour today.

• Charlestown second in three-way meet: Charlestown placed second behind Scottsburg in a triangular meet at Charlestown on Tuesday.

Scottsburg was dominant with 91 points. Charlestown scored 33, while Austin placed third with 21.

For Charlestown, First-place finishes came courtesy of Lauren Crow in the long jump, Jessica Farmer in the 800 and 400, and Megan Brooks in the discus.

Charlestown’s next meet is at Southwestern on May 1.



BOYS’ TRACK

• Jeff edges New Albany: Jeffersonville won a dual meet against host New Albany on Tuesday by a narrow 67-65 score.

Matt Wiggins got Jeff two wins with first-place finishes in the pole vault and 110-meter hurdles. Also placing first for the Red Devils were T.J Kimbrall (400), Daquan Foster (300 hurdles), Tyrell Dowdell (200), Chase Scott (long jump) and Nash Rivers (shot put).

Jeffersonville won the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.

For New Albany, Jermaine Parrish sprinted to a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash, while Anthony LaPorte toughed out a win in the 1,600-meter run. Also for the Bulldogs, wins came for Corey Grangier (800), Adam Togami (3,200), Javen Reeves (high jump) and C.J. Roberts (discus).

• New Wash second in three-way meet: New Washington scored 44 points to place second at a triangular meet held at New Washington on Tuesday.

South Central took first place with 61, while Lanesville was third with 38.

New Washington’s first-place wins came courtesy of Ian Hughes (400), Adam Diaz (300 hurdles) and Devon Herron (200).

New Wash travels to Borden today.

• Charlestown third at home: Charlestown posted a third-place finish behind Austin and Scottsburg in a triangular meet at Dutch Reis Field on Tuesday.

Jamie Hurley posted Charlestown’s only individual win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.81 seconds. The Charlestown 400-meter relay team also took first.

Charlestown travels to Southwestern on May 1.
