After an hour-and-a-half delay due to a power outage in Evansville, the Jeffersonville boys’ basketball team defeated Evansville North for a 60-56 road win on Saturday.
The Red Devils won for the fifth time in six games, but had to hold off the Huskies down the stretch.
Jeff led by 11 points in the second quarter, but North outscored the Devils 32-28 in the second half.
“We had an opportunity to throw the knock-out punch (in the second quarter), but didn’t do it,” Jeff coach Tim LaGrange said. “We made three big defensive stops in the final minutes.”
Kegan Clark led the Red Devils with 15 points. Drake Coleman drained four 3-pointers and scored 14 points, and V.J. Billups and Evan Maschmeyer added 12 apiece.
The 10-4 Red Devils will host Bedford North Lawrence next Friday in a Hoosier Hills Conference matchup. The Stars are 6-6 overall, but 3-0 in the conference.
• Highlanders win at Madison: Floyd Central extended its winning streak to three games with a 71-48 victory at Madison.
Senior Cody Banet paced the Highlanders (10-4, 3-2 Hoosier Hills Conference) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Teammates Brandon Codey and Ben Allen each scored 11 points and Floyd senior Jeffrey Thompson poured in 10.
The Highlanders led 19-7 after the first quarter and 33-16 at halftime. They will host Seymour next Friday.• Strong second half lifts Pekin over Pirates: Pekin Eastern outscored Charlestown 40-18 in the second half to overcome a five-point halftime deficit and earn a 62-45 Mid-Southern Conference victory.
Pirate coach Sean Smith said his troops didn’t take advantage of their chances to stretch the first-half advantage, missing 18 shots in the paint for the game.
“We had a lot of opportunities, and we couldn’t get the ball to fall,” Smith explained. “In the second half, we struggled offensively, and they beat us to every loose ball and rebound.”
Tim Hall was the only Pirate in double figures with 12 points. Trey Albertson led Eastern (9-4, 4-2 MSC) with 24 points.
Charlestown (7-5, 2-2) will be back in action next Friday when it hosts Class 2A No. 1 and 11-0 Brownstown Central.
• Lions crush Medora: Rock Creek Christian Academy used a balanced effort and unselfish play to cruise past Medora, 85-27.
Eran McGregory led the Lions with a season-high 18 points, while teammate Dontale Mayes had 15 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Rock Creek surrendered only seven field goals to the Hornets.
“McGregory played well,” Rock Creek coach Chris Brown said. “We were very unselfish. All of the kids played hard and so did Medora’s.”
Shawn Austin also had 15 points. Joe Pearson added 11, Reece Barker 10 and Shaquille Neptune nine for Rock Creek, which is 8-6 and will host Cannelton next Saturday.
• Clarksville edges Trinity Lutheran: Trinity Lutheran (7-6) made a late rally, but Clarksville held off the Cougars for a 61-59 home win.
The Generals led 27-25 at the half behind good defense, then stretched the lead to 45-39 at the end of the three quarters. With two minutes to go in regulation, the Cougars trailed by 10 points but rallied with three 3-pointers and a two-point bank shot. Fortunately for the Generals, Trinity could not get over the hump.
“It was a really good defensive effort on our part,” Clarksville assistant coach Jim Matthews said.
Junior Cory Brown, sophomore Billy Edelen and freshman Aidan McEwen led Clarksville with 15 points apiece.
“It was a good weekend for us,” Matthews said of a split with Scottsburg and Trinity.
The Generals (4-8) will host 5-7 New Washington on Wednesday.
• Warriors lose close one to Lanesville: Despite holding one of the state’s top scorers in Bryant Conder to 12 points, host Christian Academy of Indiana dropped to 1-13 with a 37-32 loss to Lanesville.
Freshman Cody Bachman was the only double-figure scorer for the Warriors with 10 points. Greg Laughlin chipped in seven.
CAI will host Providence on Friday.
• Generals fall at Scottsburg: On Friday, a late three-point play lifted host Scottsburg past Clarksville, 71-67.
McEwen led the Generals (0-6 Mid-Southern Conference) with 17 points, followed by Brown with 14. Edelen and fellow Clarksville sophomore Wes Rittman each scored 13.
GIRLS
• Highlander girls stay unbeaten: Another game, another victory for the undefeated Floyd Central girls’ basketball team.
Junior center Jennifer Smith scored a game-high 30 points to lead the Class 4A No. 2 Highlanders past host Corydon on Saturday, 63-44. Smith, who also grabbed 10 rebounds, was two points shy of matching her career high. She scored 32 points in a 62-46 victory on Dec. 9 at South Oldham (Ky.).
Teammates Brigid Morrissey and Mercades Bierman each tallied eight points.
Floyd (16-0) was hitting on all cylinders right from the outset. The Highlanders led 15-7 after the first quarter and outscored the Panthers 19-6 in the second to go up 34-13 at halftime.
“It was a nice win,” Floyd head coach Joe Voelker said. “We went out and had a nice first half. We need to do a better job with our half-court offense. But I was pleased with the way we came out.”
The Highlanders will host Meade County (Ky.) in a make-up game on Monday.• Creek handles Musketeers, 37-30: Maribeth Rogers scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Silver Creek (8-9, 3-5 MSC) knocked off Pekin Eastern, 37-30, in a MSC tilt on Saturday.
Dragons coach Ryan Apple also praised the defense of Rogers — along with fellow frontliners Kim Jamros and Alex Tinsley — in the win.
“It was a defensive slugfest,” Apple said. “They have those two 6-footers, but our inside players played a heck of a game on them.”
Jamros added seven points and Tinsley four for the Dragons. Mandi Martin had five points and a team-high four steals. Molly Voyles and Emily Clayton also had four apiece for the Dragons, who will go to South Central on Wednesday.
“There were times today that we had four freshmen on the floor,” Apple said. “We’re pretty young, so that’s a big win for us.”
• Braves thump Rock Creek: Host Borden pulled out to a 27-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 69-21 triumph over Rock Creek Christian.
Allison Bishop was one of four Braves to score in double digits. The sophomore had a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds.
Borden’s Allison Rademacher tallied 11 points, and teammates Erin Mikel and McKenna Williams each had 10.
“We were able to get out early and go up big on them,” Braves head coach Charlie Gardner said. “It was an all-around good effort.”
Sophomore Kelli Davidson led the Lions (0-15) with a game-high 15 points.
Borden will visit Paoli on Monday. Rock Creek will host Perry Central on Tuesday.
