HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: Mustangs can’t recover from early deficit

South Central earns SAC title with 62-44 victory

ELIZABETH — The New Washington boys’ basketball team fell behind 18-2 after one quarter at South Central on Saturday and could never dig itself out of the hole in a crucial 62-44 Southern Athletic Conference loss.

The Mustangs were only outscored 44-42 over the final three quarters, and they managed to cut the Rebels’ (9-8) lead to 52-38 midway through the third quarter, but that was as close as New Wash would get.

“We just didn’t come to play. It’s real simple,” New Washington coach Terry White said of his 10-6 squad. “I have to take credit for that as the coach of this team.”

South Central coach Randall Schoen said he is grateful that the Rebels were able to grab the large lead.

“We knew we were going to have to come out and hit shots in the first quarter against them,” Schoen said. “I think our intensity level was higher than theirs in the first quarter. After that, it was a pretty (even) game.”

New Washington’s only two points in the first period came from the free-throw line, as Lindsey Mudd hit two of her foul shots. The Mustangs finished the stanza 0-for-10 from the field.

South Central started 3-of-14, but it hit three of its final four shots to stretch the lead from 9-1 to 18-1 before Mudd’s second free throw.

“Mentally and physically, we just didn’t come to play,” White reiterated. “We wanted to dictate tempo and we didn’t do that. In turn, we dug ourselves an early hole.”

In the second quarter, New Wash outscored the hosts 13-11 behind seven points from Casey Johnson, who finished with a team-high 18 points. Billie Broughton scored 10 second-half points and finished with 14 points and six boards.

“She got more playing time because we had some people in foul trouble,” White said of Broughton, a junior. “We need whoever is in the game to step up.”

Johnson hit two field goals to open the fourth quarter to cut the Rebels’ advantage to 46-31. But Shelby Miller scored 11 fourth-quarter points to hold the Mustangs at bay.

Miller finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Rebels. Center Abby Day backed up Miller with 14 points and 10 rebounds for South Central, which is 4-0 in the SAC and has clinched at least a share of its seventh conference crown in the last eight years.

Schoen said the next time his Rebels possibly see the Mustangs (2-1 SAC) — at Class A Sectional 62 at New Washington — he expects the game to go differently.

“We always have a great game when we match up with New Washington,” he said. “We won’t go in there and think we’ll get a 16-point lead in the first quarter. If we do see them (in the sectional), it will be a different game.”
