H.S. ROUNDUP: Red Devils up winning streak to seven with victories over Harrison, North

Class 4A No. 5 New Albany improves to 19-2

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Jeffersonville softball team extended its winning streak to seven games on Saturday at Jeff High Field by winning both ends of a split doubleheader.

The Red Devils (16-4) defeated Evansville Harrison in the first game, 4-2. Three Jeff players went 2-for-3 in Lakin Roland, Maddie Powell and Marley Edwards.

Kayleigh Thomas was the winning pitcher in a relief role. In three innings of work, Thomas allowed no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Red Devils snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs. Roland scored from third base on an error, and Edwards came home on a sacrifice fly by Tori Flaten.

Jeff defeated Evansville North in the second contest, 6-1. Like in their game versus Harrison, the Red Devils had three players with 2-for-3 efforts. They were Roland, Courtney Shepherd and Emma Coons.

Jeff’s Kayla Poppe got the victory on the mound, improving her record to 9-2. In a starting role, she lasted three innings, yielding one run (earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

“The girls came out and really played well today,” Red Devils’ head coach Jodi Bradley said. “That’s good going into our (Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament) game with Jennings County on Monday.”

Jeff will travel to North Vernon for its first-round game with the Class 4A No. 10 Panthers at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

• Bulldogs take two in split twinbill: New Albany also swept a split doubleheader against Evansville North and Evansville Harrison at Prosser Field. The Bulldogs defeated North in the first game, 7-5. They needed only six innings in the nightcap to down Harrison, 10-0.

With the score tied at five against North, New Albany (13-8) scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by McKenzie Gill and Hannah Morton to go up by two runs.

Rudy paced the Bulldogs’ offense, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Teammate Mady Baumann went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Morton and New Albany’s Abby Litkenhous and Meg Biggs each went 2-for-3. Biggs had an RBI.

Gill was the winning pitcher in relief. She threw the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits. Gill had four strikeouts and no walks.

Versus Harrison, Brittany Jones was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Morton and teammate Jamie Whitten each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Baumann also was 2-for-4.

Gill picked up her second victory of the day by tossing a four-hit shutout. She fanned two and walked none.

The Bulldogs will visit Columbus East for their first-round game of the HHC Tournament at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

• Dragons finish third in Plainfield Invitational: After losing to host Plainfield 4-0 in the semifinals, Silver Creek rebounded to defeat Greenfield-Central in the consolation game of the Plainfield Invitational, 4-0.

Dragon starting pitcher McKenzie Bush got the victory to stay undefeated at 4-0. Bush pitched all seven innings in her six-hit shutout, striking out five and walking one.

Sydney Ledwedge led the Silver Creek bats, going 2-for-3 with a triple.

Against Plainfield, the Dragons managed only Brooke Barnett single. Silver Creek pitcher Shayla Cravens went the distance, yielding four earned runs on eight hits. Cravens fanned three and issues two bases on balls.

“It was a good day for us,” Dragons’ assistant coach Terry Purlee said. “There is good quality softball in the Indianapolis area, and we’re happy with the way the kids performed.”

Silver Creek (14-6) will host Brownstown at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.



BASEBALL

• Bulldogs cruise past Scottsburg: Trailing 4-1, Class 4A No. 5 New Albany scored 15 times in the top of the fourth en route to a 20-4 victory in five innings at Scottsburg. The Bulldogs (19-2) sent 19 batters to the plate in the fourth, collecting 14 hits.

Ten New Albany players had at least one hit in the contest. Eric Burnett paced the Bulldog bats, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Teammate Zach Worrall went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.

Four Bulldogs had 2-for-3 games in Jordan Striegel, Logan Striegel, Josh Rogers and Cameron Mullins. Rogers and Logan Striegel each drove in two runs. Also for New Albany, Shane Robison was 2-for-4 and Garrett Sherrell had a pair of RBIs.

Robison got the victory in relief to improve his record to 5-0. In 2 2/3 innings of work, he yielded one earned run on one hit with four strikeouts and one walk.

New Albany will travel to Floyd Central for the first round of the HHC Tournament at 6 p.m. on Monday.

• Bulldogs get past South: On Friday with the score tied at four, Sherrell smacked a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Tucker Marcum for the eventual game-winning run in New Albany’s 5-4 win over Bloomington South at Mount Tabor Field.

Jordan Striegel earned the victory on the mound in relief. He pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Burnett went 2-for-3.

“It was a good game for us,” Bulldogs’ head coach Chris McIntyre said. “We had to play and execute in some pressure situations. South has a really good program.”



BOYS’ GOLF

• Floyd Central third at Jasper Invite: Fifth-ranked Floyd Central finished third at the Jasper Invitational on Saturday at Sultan’s Run Golf Course in Jasper with a team score of 304. The 11th-ranked host Wildcats won the tournament with a score of 297, followed by top-ranked Evansville Harrison in second with a 300.

Three Highlanders shot in the 70s. Jack Sparrow carded an even-par 72 to finish second in the individual standings, followed by Austin Peckham with a 75 and Jay Holderman with a 76. Also for Floyd Central, Devin Jenkins fired an 81 and Alex Beyer had an 84.

The Highlanders will play in the Big Four Tournament on Monday at Covered Bridge Golf Club in Sellersburg.

• Henryville’s Embry earns medalist honors at Hauser Invite: Henryville senior Evan Embry shot an even-par 72 to win medalist honors at the Hauser Invitational at Clifty Creek Golf Course in Hope.

Henryville placed fifth as a team with a 364. For the Hornets, Cody Gray scored a 95, Cameron Furnish had a 98, Mitchell Fields fired a 99 and Bailey Reister carded a 103.

“Evan played a very solid round. He’s hitting the ball well and his short game continues to improve. He was runner-up (in the Hauser Invitational) last season and was happy to earn medallist honors today,” Henryville head coach Robin Embry said. “As far as our team score, our No. 2 and 3 spots have to score better. We’re improving, and with hard work, we’ll play our best golf over the last few weeks of the season.”

The Hornets will host Christian Academy of Indiana and South Central at 4:30 p.m. on Monday at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Memphis.



GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Dragons, NA, Jeff compete in Jasper Invite: Silver Creek finished third with 26 points in this weekend’s Jasper Invitational. New Albany placed fourth with 23 points, while Jeff was sixth with 15.

The Red Devils’ highest-finishing position was at No. 1 doubles, where Morgan Reilly and Macy Lancaster downed New Albany’s Kaitlin Mooney and Raquel Burch to get third place, 6-2, 6-1.

Jeff’s Emily Lewis ended up fifth at No. 2 singles, losing to the Bulldogs’ Erin Kanii in the final round, 6-4, 6-0.

The Red Devils’ No. 3 singles player Larissa Neville and their No. 2 doubles team of Rachel Williams and Kaitlin Wunsch each finished seventh. Neville beat Silver Creek’s Morgan Sharp in the final round for seventh, 6-3, 6-1. Jeff No. 1 singles player Julianna Jenks wound up eighth.

No other Silver Creek or New Albany individual results were reported at press time. No. 6 Jasper won the tournament, while No. 17 Bloomington South was second.

The Dragons will visit Salem at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Both New Albany and Jeff will play opening-round matches of the HHC Tournament on Monday. The Bulldogs will entertain Columbus East at 5:30 p.m., while the Red Devils will travel to Seymour at 5 p.m.
