Both Jeffersonville wrestling coach Danny Struck and Floyd Central coach Rob Willman are both confident their respective teams can come home with some hardware from tonight’s Jasper Team Regional.
The Red Devils will wrestle Southridge in one semifinal dual meet, while the Highlanders will take on the host Wildcats in the other semi. The championship will be after the two semifinals.
“Our chances are good if we come with the right mindset,” said Struck, whose program has never won a regional title. “Our kids have never been in the regional finals before, so our coaches are working as hard as we can to prepare them for that mindset. We feel good.”
Floyd will try to win its third regional championship in four seasons. The Highlanders lost last year’s title match to Jasper, 33-28.
“All of the teams in the team regional are very close,” Willman said. “It could come down to one or two key matches. We feel that we have as good a chance as anybody. (Jasper and Southridge) each have solid individuals at about every weight.”
Struck thinks there is an excellent chance of a Jeff-Floyd final and is already envisioning individual matchups between both teams.
“I believe it will be us and Floyd in the finals,” Struck said. “At 145, Coty Hendricks is 1-1 against the Floyd kid (Garrett Blackman), and at 152 Austin Copeland won the sectional (final over Tyler Alvey). To beat Floyd head-to-head, we must gain these (matches) and wins at 103, 112 and 119. Floyd will be a good dual team.”
Willman is taking a wait-and-see approach in determining strategy for the semis and possibly the championship.
“It will come down to matchups,” he said. “It is hard to say what the matchups are right now because kids can move weight classes. The team that wins will be the team that gets pins but does not get pinned the most.”
The regional champion will advance to the Southridge Team Semistate next Wednesday.
