New Wash wins opener of CAI Tourney, 77-43
The New Washington boys’ basketball team kept its perfect record intact on Saturday, defeating Columbus Christian 77-43 in the opening day of North pool play in the Christian Academy of Indiana Holiday Tournament at Austin.
Sophomore guard Devin Freels paced the Mustangs (6-0) with a game-high 19 points, four assists and no turnovers. Teammate Vincent Minton recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ten Mustangs cracked the scoring column.
New Washington scored 45 points in the second half, including 34 in the fourth quarter, on 50 percent shooting. That came after the Mustangs shot just 30 percent in the opening half.
“We had a pretty slow first half. We had some good looks, but they just weren’t going in,” New Washington head coach Jonathan May said. “In the second half, we did a better job of making shots. That was pretty much the difference.”
The Mustangs will play two pool games on Monday at Austin. They will face Crothersville at noon, followed by a 7 p.m. matchup with the host Eagles.
