HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Dragons win again
Silver Creek tops rival Charlestown
SELLERSBURG — Both the Charlestown and Silver Creek boys’ basketball teams found success in their season openers last week, against rivals none the less, as the Pirates handled New Washington, while the Dragons won a squeaker over Henryville.
So, the anticipation for another close game was in the air as the Pirates traveled to Silver Creek on Saturday. And for a quarter, it was all that could be hoped for. But after that, it was all Dragons as Silver Creek won 80-57.
Kyle Hayes of Charlestown drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer, his second trey of the period as Silver Creek trailed 19-15 after a quarter.
The Dragons then shut the Pirates out for almost six minutes as they went on a 16-0 run, in which five different players scored.
Charlestown, which didn’t get its first points of the period until Anthony Lloyd hit a jumper in the lane at the 2:28 mark, cut the lead to eight, 33-25 at halftime.
If there was any anticipation of a comeback by the Pirates, it was short-lived.
Anthony Everage, who led the Dragons with eight points in the first half, and Lloyd traded baskets to open the third period. But the Dragons shot 11 of 14 from the floor for the period and forced six more Pirate turnovers to give Silver Creek a 59-42 lead after three quarters.
“We got off to a slow start trying to contain Lloyd,” Silver Creek coach John Bradley said. “We thought that the zone was the way to go, but it turned out we were doing something cute that we are not good at. After that we played about as well as can be expected for this time of year.”
Silver Creek placed four in double figures led by Everage with 18 points. Cody Jackson finished with 17, Justin Sturgeon had 14 and Jack Eckert had 10.
“We both shot the ball and defended well tonight,” Bradley said. “And we were able to go 10-11 guys deep, we had fresh legs on the floor.”
Silver Creek starts five seniors, a luxury all coaches would love to have. But it isn’t always as it seems as the Dragons lost a ton of talent from last season.
“These guys are determined to gain respect and they’re doing it through hustle, intensity and doing it on the defensive end,” Bradley said. “Shot selection is important also and they’re doing well with that.”
Lloyd led Charlestown with 12 points. Hayes added 11.
“It all comes down to the turnovers,” Charlestown coach Sean Smith said. “We didn’t take care of the ball and we didn’t make good passes. That led to them getting a lot of fast break layups, but give them credit, too. They shot the ball well.
“In the first quarter we executed well, but after that their was a lot of selfishness on our part. At New Washington, we played hard for 32 minutes as a team. I expected that to continue tonight.”
Both teams will resume action on Friday as Silver Creek will travel to Clarksville and Charlestown will host Scottsburg.
“Our job now as a coaching staff is to keep the intensity up,” Bradley said.
