NEW ALBANY — Early in the first quarter on Tuesday, it appeared that Christian Academy of Indiana’s young boys’ basketball team might be up for the task in its season opener.
With two minutes to go in the first quarter, freshman Cody Bachman’s layup cut an experienced Henryville team’s lead to 14-11.
Just a few minutes later, it was apparent that the Hornets’ experience would win out. Over the next 10 minutes, Henryville outscored the Warriors 26-4 — including 21-4 in the second quarter alone — and improved to 2-2 with a 71-41 victory.
“Henryville is a tough, experienced ballclub and we are not,” CAI’s second-year coach Joshua Hutchinson said.
After a 1-1 record in the Loogootee Tournament, which included a 73-36 loss to the host Lions, Henryville coach Perry Hunter was happy with the 30-point win.
“We came here and we did what we had to do,” Hunter said. “We wanted to come here and make sure that they had to match our intensity and that we wouldn’t have to match theirs.”
During the first- and second-quarter runs, six different Hornets scored, led by nine points from Steven Mayfield and Taylor Weeks.
“We were very unselfish offensively,” Hunter said. “We weren’t too worried about who scored. Defensively, we got in passing lanes. For this early in the season, it was a good game for us. It was a total team effort.”
The biggest factor was rebounding. In the second quarter, Henryville outrebounded the Warriors, 11-0. In fact, CAI went over 12 minutes — during the second and third periods — without a rebound. The Hornets outrebounded the Warriors 30-13 for the contest.
“That was one of our points of emphasis before the game,” Hutchinson said. “Some of that was just inexperience. I don’t think it was a matter of coaching or effort. I think it was a matter of not having enough varsity reps that are needed to become a physical team.”
CAI does appear to have a bright future ahead of it. Freshmen scored 27 of the Warriors’ 41 points, led by Bachman’s 17. He was 5-for-6 from the field and 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Mayfield had a game-high 24 points for the Hornets. He also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Weeks finished with 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Dylan Wolf scored eight of his 11 points in the first quarter and had a team-high eight rebounds.
The Hornets will host North Harrison on Saturday. The Warriors will be back in action Saturday at New Washington.
