ROUNDUP: Pirates hand Warriors first loss

Mustangs shoot down Rock Creek Academy

Charlestown limited visiting Scottsburg to 31 points in the first three quarters and the Pirates hit 15-of-18 foul shots in the final eight minutes as they earned a 65-51 victory over the Warriors at Dunn Arena.

Steven Coyne led Charlestown (2-1, 1-1 Mid-Southern Conference) with 13 points. Kyle Hayes was 8-of-8 at the foul line in the final quarter as he scored 12 points and Scottsburg transfer Joe Wilson scored 11 points against his former team in the victory.

“Our team defense was outstanding tonight,” said Charlestown coach Sean Smith. “Overall, as far as team efforts this is as good a performance as we have had in the time we have been here. We shot free throws well, we had 15 assists as a team and we did not turn the ball over. I was extremely pleased tonight.”

The Pirates will travel to Henryville on Tuesday.

• Mustangs roll to first win: Dustin Bowman scored 18 points, connecting on four 3-pointers and New Washington hit 10 from downtown as a team to score a 71-52 win over Rock Creek Christian.

Devin Freels had 14, Drake Krohn had 13 and Chris Radford finished with 11 for the Mustangs (1-1).

“In the first half seven of the nine guys we had who played scored,” said New Washington head coach Jonathan May. “We moved the ball very well and executed on the offensive end very effectively.”

The Mustangs host Christian Academy of Indiana tonight.

• Lanesville avenges Braves: Lanesville got a little bit of revenge was last year’s 60-40 loss to Borden in the Henryville Sectional.

The Eagles outscored Borden 22-12 in the first quarter and led 31-16 at the half en route to a 62-53 Southern Athletic Conference victory.

“We ran into a buzzsaw,” Borden coach Doc Nash said. “I have to give credit to Lanesville. They hit shots and we didn’t.”

Lanesville made eight 3-pointers, led by Bryant Conder’s five. Conder had a game-high 28 points.

Dalton Wagoner led the Braves, who are now 0-3, with 16 points. Brandon Beam added 15 and Jacob Rich had 12. Only six Braves scored on the night.

Borden travels to South Central for another SAC contest next Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

• No. 2 Devils improve to 6-0: Jeffersonville won its sixth straight game to open the season and is now 3-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference after a 66-31 win over Madison.

Jalynn McClain scored 26 points and had nine rebounds. Both game-highs. She went 9-for-18 from the field and 8-for-8 from the line and also had two steals.

Brooke Valentine provided 12 points off of the bench for Jeff, which shot 45 percent from the field and went 11 for 12 from the foul line.

“We hit 16-of-17 foul shots and took care of the basketball,” said Jeff coach Chad Gilbert. “Those were two areas that we were concerned with coming into the year and we’ve been doing a really good job in those spots so far.”

The Devils are off until next Saturday when they travel to Columbus East.

• Pioneers drop close contest: Providence fell to 1-5 after a heartbreaking 64-59 loss to Presentation Academy.

After a tough opening schedule, Providence coach Brad Burden said Friday’s game was one the Pioneers should have won.

“I’m disappointed because I felt that it was a game we should have won and we couldn’t get it done,” he said. “We just didn’t play well enough and made costly turnovers at the wrong times.”

The Pioneers led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and were tied at 27 at the half.

Megan Eve had a game-high 24 points to lead Providence, which went 15 for 24 from the foul line.

“That really hurt us,” Brad Burden said.

The Pioneers next game is another tough one. They travel to Silver Creek for a contest next Wednesday. The Dragons are 4-3 after an 81-29 win over Clarksville on Thursday.
