BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Mustangs pull off weekend sweep by beating CAI
Rock Creek boys, C-town girls prevail on Saturday
The New Washington boys’ basketball team completed a weekend sweep of its two games, defeating visiting Christian Academy of Indiana on Saturday at James Matthews Gymnasium, 61-36. On Friday, the Mustangs (2-1) rolled past Rock Creek Christian, 71-52.
Point guard Devin Freels paced New Washington with 18 points. Teammate Chris Radford scored 15 and the Mustangs’ Jacob Ramer chipped in 12.
New Washington was up 33-12 at halftime and 50-17 after three quarters.
“I was pretty pleased with it,” New Washington head coach Jonathan May said. “I thought we moved the ball well. The kids kept getting good looks. We still have things to fix in our half-court defense.”
Junior guard Miller McCorkle led the Warriors (0-2) with eight points.
The Mustangs will travel to Southwestern on Friday. CAI will host West Washington on Tuesday.
• Lions bounce back against Crothersville: After Friday’s loss to New Washington, Rock Creek Christian rebounded with a 70-60 home victory against Crothersville.
Eran McGregory and Shawn Austin each tallied 20 points for the Lions (3-2). Austin also had 14 rebounds. Sophomore teammate Reece Barker scored 15 points and senior Ethan Hawn added 11.
The Lions pulled out to an early 17-2 lead four minutes into the game. But Rock Creek head coach Chris Brown was not pleased with the Lions’ 13-of-33 free-throw shooting.
“It was the best four minutes we’ve played all season. Shawn Austin did an excellent job,” Brown said. “I was very displeased with the free-throw effort. We’re just not concentrating.”
Rock Creek will travel to Trinity Lutheran next Friday.
• Hornets suffer 51-40 loss to Cougars: Host Henryville dropped below .500 with a 51-40 setback to North Harrison at Furnish Gymnasium.
Junior D.J. Carlson led the Hornets (2-3) with a game-high 15 points, while teammate Taylor Weeks tallied 10.
The Cougars shot 75 percent in the first half to pull out to a 27-15 advantage at intermission.
“They shot well and we didn’t. When we don’t shoot well, then we’re not very good,” Henryville head coach Perry Hunter said.
The Hornets will host Charlestown on Tuesday.
• Pioneers lose in overtime: Host Madison outscored Providence 11-5 in overtime to prevail 57-51 at Salm Gymnasium.
A.J. Schmidt was the only Pioneer to score in double figures with 21 points.
Providence (1-2) will host Scottsburg next Saturday.
• Warriors fall at New Washington: Christian Academy of Indiana had no players score in double digits in its 61-36 setback at New Washington.
Junior guard Miller McCorkle led the Warriors (0-2) with eight points. CAI trailed 13-4 after the first quarter and 33-12 at halftime.
The Warriors will host West Washington on Tuesday.
