Henryville earned a big road victory, 61-60 at Austin on Friday when Kyle Robertson hit two free throws with seven seconds left.
“We had been close against two other Mid-Southern teams,” Henryville coach Perry Hunter said of 2-point losses to Silver Creek and Henryville. “It was big. Really big.”
The Hornets led by 14 points with just over four minutes to play, but Austin came back to take the lead in the final seconds.
On Henryville’s final offensive possession, Steven Mayfield drove into the lane from teh right wing and dished to Robertson, who hit both ends of the one-and-bonus.
“It was a really nice play,” Hunter said of Mayfield’s drive and dish.
Austin’s Ben Raichel, who hit six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points, missed a 12-foot bank shot at the buzzer.
Taylor Weeks led the Hornets with 19 points. Mayfield had 16, Robertson 10 and D.J. Carlson finished with nine.
The 3-4 Hornets go to Lanesville next Friday for a Southern Athletic Conference matchup. Lanesville is 2-1.
• Braves outscored South Central in overtime, 11-6: Borden made seven of its eight free throw attempts in overtime and won its first game of the season, 52-47 over South Central on Friday.
Dalton Wagoner scored five points and Brandon Beam added four in the overtime session.
“In all honesty, the better team did not win tonight,” Borden coach Doc Nash said. “They played harder than we did and we were flat from start to finish.”
Wagoner led Borden with 13 points and was one of three Braves in double figures. Beam added 12 and junior Travis Scott added 11.
Borden (1-3) hosts 1-3 Crothersville tonight. The Tigers dropped a 73-66 decision to Springs Valley on Friday.
• Southwestern’s inside job dooms New Wash: Southwestern’s inside game overpowered visiting New Washington as the Rebels gave the Mustangs an 86-70 setback.
“They scored 86 points tonight and I’m pretty sure you could estimate that 64 of those points came within five feet of the basket,” said New Wash coach Jonathan May. “I give my guys a lot of credit. We were down big at the half but we came out of the locker room aggressive and tried to make a game out of it.”
Devin Freels hit four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 30 points for the Mustangs (2-2). New Wash will travel to Crothersville on Tuesday.
• Lions fall at Trinity: Rock Creek Christian Academy turned the ball over 25 times and fell at Trinity Lutheran, 52-40 on Friday.
“We threw the ball all over the gym,” Lions’ coach Chris Brown said. “They packed it in (on defense) and we tried to force the basketball (inside). It was helter skelter, at best.”
Ethan Hawn led Rock Creek with 13 points. He went 4-for-8 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line. Dontale Mayes added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Lions, who are 3-3 after the loss.
Tyler Gray led Trinity Lutheran with 13 points, helping the Cougars snap a 3-game losing streak.
Rock Creek hosts 1-2 Jac-Cen-Del tonight. The Eagles are the defending Class A state champions.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
• Pioneers pull away from Henryville: Host Providence placed three players in double figures and outscored Henryville 24-11 in the final two quarters as it rolled to a 60-37 win at the Larkin Center.
Leah White and 18 points while Kallie Ash and Megan Eve each netted 14 for the Pioneers (2-5).
“It’s good for the girls to come out of a game with a win,” said Pioneer coach Brad Burden. “We’ve gone through a stretch where we played well against some very good teams and we’ve come up a little short on the scoreboard. Tonight we got a good start offensively and our defense really picked up in the second half.”
Providence will face Salem on Tuesday.
