DENISON: Injury hasn't slowed interest in Jeff's Baker

Jeffersonville’s Darryl Baker sustained a season-ending injury last month during a pre-season practice, but the list of colleges eying the budding star continues to grow.

The freshman has already taken unofficial campus visits to Michigan State and Ohio State, and he’s twice been a guest in Bloomington for Indiana University’s ‘elite camp’ for potential recruits.

And Baker was a guest of Butler University this weekend, where he took in the Butler-Ohio State game on Saturday afternoon.

Baker was diagnosed in late November with a broken knee cap, although doctors told the family no tendon, ligament or joint damage occurred.

“He’s handled the injury like a man,” said Theo Moore, the player’s uncle. “He’s trying to eat right, trying to make sure that when he starts rehab he’s in the best possible shape considering the circumstances. He’s anxious to get back going.”

Baker, who is receiving letters and questionnaires from colleges across the country, is sidelined for the entire high school season but hopes to return late in the spring for AAU.

Rohlfing attracting college interest

New Albany’s Tate Rohlfing has yet to decide if he wants to continue his basketball career at the college level.

But the senior guard has a host of schools interested in his service.

Three Division I schools -- Army, Evansville and Yale -- have contacted Rohlfing in recent months. And a handful of Division II and III schools, such as locals Southern Indiana, DePauw, Manchester, Rose-Hulman and Wabash, continue to show interest.

From his overall athleticism to his knack for shooting, Rohlfing, with his long and lanky body, possess many traits that college coaches love to see.

Lady Red Devils a must-see for college recruiters

Jeffersonville’s William S. Johnson Arena has played host to a large crowd of college coaches this season.

Four Lady Red Devils are receiving serious interest from Division I schools, according to coach Chad Gilbert:

• Senior Shanice Gholson is receiving interest from Ball State and Indiana.

• Junior Brooke Valentine is attracting interest from both Eastern Kentucky and Evansville.

• Sophomore Jalynn McClain has a scholarship offer from Wisconsin, and is also being recruited by Indiana, Indiana State and Kentucky.

• Sophomore Lakin Roland currently has an offer from Indiana State, and is also hearing from Indiana, Kentucky and Purdue.

“Having (college) coaches in the gym is good for us,” said Gilbert, whose team is currently No. 2 in the Associated Press’ Class 4-A poll and No. 8 in the USA Today’s Midwest rankings. “It gives our kids a lot of opportunities to use basketball as a vehicle to further their education. They’ve worked really hard and put in a lot of hours to get this exposure.”
