HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Devils hold off Pioneers
Adams, Maschmeyer score 14 in 55-46 win
JEFFERSONVILLE — For the second consecutive night, Jeffersonville coach Tim LaGrange couldn’t feel great about his team’s late-game performance.
But just like he did the night before, he could go home celebrating a victory.
One night after seeing a late-game lead evaporate and needing late heroics to beat Floyd Central, the Red Devils saw a chunk of a late lead slip away against visiting Providence at Johnson Arena.
Still though, Jeff scored a 55-46 victory behind some late free-throw shooting.
“We haven’t played particularly pretty over the past two ball games,” said LaGrange. “But we are getting ‘Ws’ in the end which shows this team has some toughness to play in tight situations.”
Jeff led 46-39 in the fourth quarter before a turnover led to a 3-point play by Providence’s A.J. Schmidt that cut the gap to 46-42.
A Ryan Schmidt putback basket cut the lead to 48-45 and prompted a Jeff timeout
On the ensuing possession, Jeff hit A.J. Adams with a long inbounds pass for a slam. After Adams was fouled a missed a free throw, Drake Coleman slipped in for the rebound and drew a foul — converting both chances at the line — to put Jeff up 52-45.
Jeff had 14 offensive rebounds in the game and dominated the glass against the smaller Pioneers 31-17.
“We were able to use our rebounding as a weapon,” LaGrange said. “We felt we could be strong in that area, and we got some good scoring opportunities.”
Adams and Evan Maschmayer led the Red Devils with 14 points each while Coleman hit 3-of-5 3-pointers en route to 11 points.
A.J. Schmidt earned game-high honors in the scoring column for the Pioneers, netting 19 in the loss.
The win was the sandwich game in a three-game rivalry stretch for the Devils, who have now topped Floyd Central and Providence but now head to New Albany for its rescheduled contest due to last weekend’s snowstorms.
“We’re fortunate to be winning but it will take a much more complete effort for us in our next game.”
Providence will play Holy Cross on Monday.
