BEDFORD —
Jeffersonville’s Jordy Rigsby was eliminated by Evansville Central freshman Jerod Hamilton in the Bedford Regional No. 1 singles championship match on Saturday.
Rigsby, who finished the season 23-6, led throughout the first set and had a 5-4 advantage before Hamilton stormed back to take the final three games to take the opening set, 7-5.
Hamilton then cruised into the state finals, 6-0 in the second set.
“Once Jordy lost the first set and went down 1-0, he tired to up his game just a little and started making more mistakes,” Jeff coach Mark Reilly analyzed. “I am very proud of Jordy and what he has brought to Jeffersonville tennis these last four years. He will be missed, but I wish him the best as he moves on to the college ranks.”
Earlier in the day, Rigsby moved into within one victory of the state finals with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Columbus East sophomore Seth Meyers.
In the No. 1 doubles regional, Charlestown’s Kyle Jackson and Zach Gibson — both sophomores — were eliminated in the first round by Braxton Soloe and Tyler White of Scottsburg, 6-0, 6-2.
“We didn’t play very well today,” Pirates coach Chris Ryan said. “We looked like a team that hadn’t played for 11 days. Our positioning wasn’t good and that allowed Scottsburg to have a lot of gaps to hit. It was good for the sophomores to experience the post-season atmosphere.”
Soloe and White were stopped a win from the state finals with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Sam Beckman and Trant Weyer of Forest Park in the Bedford Regional final.
