> SOUTHERN INDIANA —
Robbie Valentine only needs a phone.
Whenever an idea strikes, the Greater Clark County School Board member and former University of Louisville basketball player knows that help is only a few calls away.
So when Valentine came up with the idea of Thursday night’s “Raising the Bar” sports clinics, he knew help was only a phone call away.
“These guys are like family,” said Valentine when talking about his former teammates and University of Louisville alums who helped at the free basketball, cheerleading and football clinic. “All I have to do is ask, and they say when and where.”
Valentine was joined by former Cardinals Wiley Brown and Tony Branch along with current U of L player George Goode and three members of the U of L women’s program in helping instruct the hoops portion of the camp — which drew an estimated 140 students.
“Robbie asks me to speak at all his camps. For some reason, he seems to think I have something to add,” said Branch. “I’m either really good or really cheap. Maybe both.”
Current JHS girls’ hoops coach Chad Gilbert and members of his coaching staff also served as instructors. New football coach Bob Redman and his staff led the football clinic and the Jeff High cheerleaders were on hand to work with students at the cheer camp.
“It’s important to be involved in our community. We want to tell parents about our programs and show that we want them to be here,” said Jeffersonville principal James Sexton. “For our first event of this nature, I think this is an outstanding turnout. It’s good to see that people are excited about things happening here at the school.”
