NEW ALBANY —
The sixth-ranked IU Southeast men’s basketball team stormed back from a 34-20 halftime deficit to defeat St. Catharine College 84-71 on Wednesday night.
It was tale of two halves for the Grenadiers. IU Southeast (1-1) shot 25 percent from the field in the first half while St. Catharine shot 44 percent. The Grenadiers were 0 of 10 from three-point range in the half.
The second half was a different story. Cameron Mitchell scored 15 points in the second half while his brother, Kevin Mitchell, had 19 in the last frame. The Grenadiers outscored the Patriots 64-37 in the second half as IU Southeast shot 50 percent.
Cameron Mitchell finished with 22 points while Kevin Mitchell added 21.
The turning point in the game happened after Cameron Mitchell drove to the basket and was fouled with 12:30 left in the game and the Grenadiers trailing 48-37. He was run into by Jemarious Sykes after the whistle which resulted in a technical foul.
He hit all four throws and then hit a jumper when the Grenadiers retained possession. The Patriots had the ball stolen by Kevin Mitchell who passed to Cameron who scored his eighth point in 15 seconds of game action.
Marquis Lee scored 22 points to lead St. Catharine. The Patriots (0-1) committed 25 turnovers in the contest which helped IU Southeast get back in the game.
IU Southeast heads to Georgetown College on Saturday.
