Grenadiers defeat Kentucky State in OT
The IU Southeast men’s basketball team, ranked sixth in the latest NAIA Division II poll, was down by as many as 13 points with 9:30 left in the game on Wednesday night at Kentucky State. But the Grenadiers forced overtime and pulled out an 80-77 win over the host Thorobreds.
IU Southeast (2-2) opened the game on a 9-0 run and Kentucky State did not score until the 13:17 mark of the first half. After that, the Thorobreds went on a 20-4 run in helping them take a 28-23 lead at halftime.
IU Southeast shot just 23 percent from the field and 2-of-11 from 3-point range in the first half. The Grenadiers hung around in the second half before IU Southeast guard Jake Simpson tied the game at 65 on a layup with 4:30 remaining in regulation.
Cameron Mitchell scored on a drive to the basket to give IU Southeast the lead at 72-71 with 16.4 seconds left in regulation. Grenadier junior and Jeffersonville High School graduate Kegan Clark fouled out after committing a blocking foul. But Kentucky State’s Tryston Ford could only make 1-of-2 free throws and sent the game to overtime.
IU Southeast jumped out to a five-point lead early in overtime after Simpson hit a 3 to open the scoring in the extra session and Mitchell added a layup.
Mitchell got another layup to seal the victory for IU Southeast. Kentucky State (0-2) missed two desperation 3-pointers in the closing seconds of overtime, and IU Southeast escaped with the win.
Four Grenadiers scored in double figures. Mitchell had a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Clark added 15 points, teammate Kevin Mitchell had 14 and New Albany High School graduate Parker Henes chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
The Grenadiers shot 38 percent from the field for the game and just 5-of-24 (21 percent) from 3-point range.
