EVENING NEWS CHEERS & JEERS: May 30, 2009
CHEERS
... to Clark County Commissioners Mike Moore and Les Young voting to set aside $900,000 to help build Star Hill Road — a more direct connection to get drivers to and from Starlight and Ind. 60 near Borden.
The state and feds will be paying for the majority of the project, which has been in discussion for years. Earmarking the funding is a step closer to breaking ground and having a road that will help grown tourism in Starlight.

CHEERS
... to some positive economic news for a change. Two consumer surveys this week showed shoppers’ confidence is on the rise. The Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers reported the highest consumer confidence level since September. A 28-year low for the survey was reported in November.
Consumers’ outlook over the next 12 months and five years also jumped since April, spurred by confidence in President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus measures such as rebate checks and extension of unemployment benefits, Reuters reported Friday.
That’s important because consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the U.S. economy.
Any recovery will be tedious, but the small victories on the leading edge of a hopeful upswing should be celebrated.

CHEERS
... to the local seniors competing in the 2009 Senior Games. A huge crowd turned out Thursday for the first day of the games — which continue throughout next week.
LifeSpan Resources has sponsored the event for 15 years and its always a big hit with seniors in the community. The games go to show that getting older doesn’t mean you’re old: The senior participants are plenty active — competing in dancing, fishing, billiards, bowling and more — and their competitive spirit is inspiring.

CHEERS
... to those who participated in some form of Memorial Day service to honor servicemen and servicewomen.

JEERS
... to the boneheads who steal items from gravesites [see the story on today’s front page].
Times are tough, but when you resort to stealing items such as brass vases from headstones, you’re kicking up some seriously bad karma.

READER CHEERS
... to everyone who contributed to Henryville High School’s after prom. We would especially like to thank Southern Indiana Youth Boosters, Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden, Judge Joseph Weber, Clark County REMC, Dunn Orthodontics, Sellersburg Moose Lodge and attorney Betty Carver.
We are truly grateful for your financial support especially in these economic times. Without you, our after prom wouldn’t have been possible. We are so thankful to all of the local businesses who donated door prizes and to the parents who volunteered their time.
Also, we are thankful to live in a community that shares the responsibility in providing an alcohol- and drug-free environment for our students to continue the fun after the prom. Again, we say thank you to everyone who sponsored our after prom.
