I would like to straighten out a few misconceptions Jeffersonville Mayor Tom Galligan has about local government that he wrote about this week in a guest column.
The Jeffersonville City Council and the Clark County Council are supposed to be the fiscal bodies that set the budgets for those entities. Unfortunately, in the current city administration, those rules don’t seem to apply. I don’t always agree with the decisions of the county council, but I do respect the role they have in setting the county budget.
Tom, I take issue with your spin on my role with the shortfall of revenue the county is experiencing. I would like to believe someone has innocently misinformed you about a commissioners role in government. I, like many others in our community, want to do all I can to help our friends and neighbors who are struggling through this horrible economic crisis that we are facing.
The $5,000 pay cut that I voluntarily made last month was an attempt to help the county the best way I could. I know it’s a drop in the bucket, but as a county commissioner, I truly believe the sacrifices need to start at the top.
The residents of Jefferson Court and all the other neighborhoods that surround your proposed road don’t want it built and deserve to be treated with respect. To hear you say you’re “awaiting a traffic analysis from the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency that will go a long way in determining the road’s need” is ridiculous.
You’ve already destroyed thousands of trees and are attempting to move the “wetland” to New Washington, for Pete’s sake.
Tom, I can’t help but wonder, is this the beginning of a smear campaign against me in my re-election bid?
