JEFFERSONVILLE —
CHEERS
... go once again to the Jeffersonville High School boys’ basketball team after an improbable comeback win against No. 1 ranked Bloomington South a week ago at the Seymour Regional.
The Red Devils’ avenged a 31-point loss to South — which had won 49 straight games — to advance to the Semistate in Southport today. The game begins about 3 p.m.
Here’s to having to write a couple more cheers to the team next week and the week after.

JEERS
... to the prospect of Clark County residents having to go through another property reassessment.
This comes after the county finally received its budget order and tax rates on time — which means the county should have property tax bills due in both May and November for the first time in three years.
During the many delays, homeowners and elected officials were left to guess — or better said, estimate — tax bills and how much money was available to spend, respectively.
Now, unless Indiana changes a long-standing provision, county officials worry another reassessment is upon them this year.
“Since this is 2010, we are schedule now, after having just gotten caught up after eight years of turmoil in our assessment process ... we are scheduled for a general reassessment under the old methodology,” said Greg Fifer, attorney for the Clark County Commissioners at a meeting this week.
I don’t know about you, but the prospect of that makes my head hurt.

CHEERS
... to a couple of readers who wrote in with their own cheers, even though they didn’t sign their names to the letters.
One writer — an new Evening News subscriber — is happy that The Evening News regularly runs religion columns on Saturdays. The writer especially enjoyed the recent Nancy Kennedy column.
“[Thanks for] a hometown newspaper that brings us up-to-the-minute local news with an old-fashioned, faith-inspired, all-American ‘let’s all be good to our neighbors’ feel.”
Another writer, from Jeffersonville, wrote in to voice displeasure with the thought of moving the farmers market to the former Frank’s Steakhouse property along Seventh Street, citing it as “out of the way and U-G-L-Y.”
“The charm of Preservation Station, with the trees, benches, grass — an occasional musician — was part of the draw for customers. We love the farmers’ fresh produce, flowers, eggs and herbs. We planned our meals around the ease and availability of the Preservation location.
“Let’s help them find a beautiful, convenient new home ... what about a return to Warder Park, or Bob Hedge or Perrin Park?”

READER CHEERS
... to Jeffersonville High School boys’ basketball fans.
The Jeff fans who I talked to after the regional game against my team, Bloomington South, were the most gracious winners I have ever encountered. Some told me how bad they felt for me ... I guess I looked like I was about to cry.
They tried to encourage me by saying how good we’d be next year. Some offered up the opinion that we got some bad calls that cost us the game.
One 93 year old lady — and her 98-year-old husband — told me they’d been following Jeff basketball for over 80 years, and had suffered many, many disappointments.
They encouraged me to keep my spirits up. This was all a very good lesson to me — never be arrogant in your victory, but always be a humble, gracious winner.
Thank you, Jeffersonville fans for that lesson. It would be fitting to see all these nice people be rewarded with a state championship. Go Jeff!

READER CHEERS
... to The Evening News.
In our local paper, we can still read the TV listings without squinting like in the other paper.
Every day, there are help-wanted ads in The Evening News. The other paper not only doesn’t have the classifieds every day, when the classifieds do appear, you’d be lucky to find a help-wanted ad. The other paper’s Indiana section and Clark County issue are misnamed. For Indiana — local and state news — The Evening News prevails on a regular basis.
One other item, The Evening News is a lot easier to spell!

READER CHEERS
... to my husband of 55 years, Earl, and my son, Marty, for lovingly and compassionately allowing me to invite four homeless people to our home for Christmas dinner Dec. 25.

OUR VIEW: Board needs to retain Daeschner
We realize these are just numbers, but they are the method instituted by the state and federal government to measure a school’s effectiveness. It’s understandable to take issue with how schools and students are measured. That’s not Daeschner’s fault. He is simply helping improve the school system in the required areas.
