... to the first responders in Floyd County. On Feb. 11, my husband and I, sister, and brother-in-law went to eat dinner. Upon leaving the restaurant, my sister stepped on some ice, which she did not see, — and fell, breaking her elbow in two places, and cutting her hand, requiring several stitches.

Our first thought was to call 911. The first responders — the Fire Department — were there in minutes, showing all the care and administering the aid until EMS could get there. They were ever so caring and took all the necessary precautions needed to get her to Floyd Memorial Hospital, where she was evaluated and treated and they put the necessary stitches in her hand.

I just want to thank all of the great people who were so kind to us during a very stressful moment in our life. We are so fortunate to have all these professionals in our city. You never realize all the good they do until you or a loved one is in a dangerous situation.

Hats off to you all — fire, police, EMS and Floyd Memorial Hospital! A big hats off to all of them!

... to Floyd County Republican Party Chairman Dave Matthews’ “kinder, gentler” reply published on Feb. 9 (a rebuttal about whether our economic messes were caused primarily by individuals or by the system).

I love a good honest debate, free of “politics as usual” — especially one in which the author’s argument on a topic persuades me to change my mind in his favor, as Mr. Matthews did powerfully in this case. Thanks!

... to our crusading New Albany councilman Dan Coffey and his rabble rousing about sewer rates and corrupt local government (Note to self: Isn’t Coffey the longest sitting city politician?). I totally agree that government must be held accountable. I don’t put it past any person with power to try some funny business. There is always temptation. So let’s watchdog those we elected! But Coffey’s antics continue to embarrass New Albany. Instead of being a true leader and looking for a solution — it took Rep. Ed Clere to locate some help while Coffey grandstanded — he blames others. Instead of looking for potential solutions, this elected leader seems only interested in picking up his pitchfork and torch. Do some research and please join the logical and constructive discussions so the city you help lead can move into the future.
