Floyd County Sheriff's Most Wanted - April 1, 2008

Three men make Floyd County’s initial list

On a regular basis, The Evening News and The Tribune will run a list of people who are most wanted by local law enforcement agencies. However, just because someone appears on this list does not mean they have been found guilty of committing a crime. It means they are wanted for either questioning for an alleged crime or need to go through the trial process for an active warrant.

Police recommend residents never try to apprehend a suspect. If anyone has information on the whereabouts of any of these individuals, they are asked to call Detective Capt. Jeff L. Topping with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department at 812-948-5400.

Curtis L. Brown Jr.

• DATE OF BIRTH: July 23, 1972

• WANTED FOR: Class B felony armed robbery out of Floyd County Superior Court

• LAST KNOWN ADDRESS: 3426 Grant St., Louisville

• SEX: Male

• RACE: Black

• HAIR: Black

• EYES: Brown

• HEIGHT: 5 feet 11 inches

• WEIGHT: 207 pounds

Brown allegedly robbed Tumbleweed Restaurant along Charlestown Road of nearly $5,000 in August 2003, according to a probable-cause affidavit. He purportedly threatened a female employee with bodily harm while showing a firearm, records say.

Herbie Tarrance

• DATE OF BIRTH: Dec. 17, 1969

• WANTED FOR: Class B felony burglary and class D felony theft out of Floyd Superior Court

• LAST KNOWN ADDRESS: 2229 W. Market St., Louisville

• SEX: Male

• RACE: Caucasian

• HAIR: Brown

• EYES: Blue

• HEIGHT: 5 feet 11 inches

• WEIGHT: 165 pounds

Tarrance is accused of breaking into a man’s house and stealing a television, a computer and equipment, a rifle, a shotgun, a variety of jewelry, coin change, a digital camera and two camcorders, according to a probable-cause affidavit. DNA evidence linked Tarrance, who had previously been incarcerated, with the crime, records say. The alleged crime happened in February.

James Douglas Wright Jr.

• DATE OF BIRTH: Dec. 19, 1980

• WANTED FOR: three class C felony burglary charges, class D felony theft, resisting law enforcement, operating while intoxicated and a habitual offender filing in Floyd Superior Court

• LAST KNOWN ADDRESS: 517 Jay St., New Albany; also listed as city at-large.

• SEX: Male

• RACE: Caucasian

• HAIR: Brown

• EYES: Brown

• HEIGHT: 6 feet 3 inches

• WEIGHT: 150 pounds

Wright is accused of being involved in three October burglaries, and previously resisting law enforcement and drunken driving, said Detective Capt. Jeff L. Topping with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department. He, along with two co-defendants who were arrested, stand accused of stealing liquor and money from the American Legion in Floyd Knobs and an automatic teller machine from Steinert’s Grill and Pub along Charlestown Road in New Albany, according to a probable-cause affidavit. The group also allegedly tried to break into the Office Depot along State Street in New Albany, but were scared away by a cleaning crew inside, records say. Wright also had a habitual offender filing against him shortly after the alleged burglary spree, because of two past felony burglary-related convictions in Florida.

“These folks have all committed serious crimes against people and property. Most people who do such are apprehended relatively quickly. However, this particular group seems to know how to avoid the authorities, and we want to help bring the victims justice,” said Jeff Topping.
