NEW ALBANY —
Instead of slinging candy bars, cookie dough or summer sausage, New Albany High School’s theater department will sell something they know for fundraising efforts — entertainment.
Tonight, the program will host its first Coffee House Production of An Evening With The Stars with two bands providing live entertainment. Both musical guests feature former students of NAHS theater.
David Longest, theater director, said he got the idea for the fundraiser after seeing a similar show at The Grand in downtown New Albany. He said after seeing a crowd come out for a few bands, he thought there would be some success for something similar for a theater fundraiser.
“It’s just kind of a shot in the dark to see if it works,” Longest said. “If it works, they’ll probably do more of them. Both of the bands are very unique and I think it will be an entertaining night at the least.”
The first band, Erin Hill and Her Psychedelic Harp, will start off the show. Longest said Hill was one of his first students when he started teaching in the 1980s and has had a fairly successful career on Broadway.
Another band, The Winston Hours, features 2010 NAHS graduate Taylor Nicholson. Longest said the band is gaining popularity in the Midwest.
Gourmet coffees and desserts will be available at the concession stand. Tickets are $8 at the door, with no reservations required.

In concert: IU Southeast ends 70th anniversary celebration at beginning of outdoor concert season
“I think it’s really very appropriate that we have the conclusion of our 70th anniversary celebration at Warder Park because Warder Park is where we began,” IUS chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles said. “As our first home, it played a very important role in establishing the IU Southeast we know today.”
