JEFFERSONVILLE —
Sure elections can sometimes turn dirty, but leave it to the New Albany-Jeffersonville boys high school basketball rivalry to bring out the real smear tactics among local officials.
Confident in the Red Devils’ chances, Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore challenged New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan to a wager during their first official day in office Tuesday. Moore’s bet was that the mayor from the losing team’s city must volunteer for a day to clean the kennels of the other city’s animal shelter.
“I foresee a lopsided victory, with the Red Devils winning by 14 points,” Moore predicted.
Jeffersonville and New Albany High Schools will renew their rivalry Friday, with the Red Devils sporting a record of 5-1 and the Bulldogs standing at 4-3 for the season.
Continuing his verbal showmanship, Moore said in terms of basketball, New Albany “represents a true second-class city.”
But Gahan didn’t take the bait.
“Thanks but no thanks,” Gahan said in response to Moore’s challenge.
“I expect it will be a great game, and I’m sure the Bulldogs will represent our city well as they always do, but it’s not a fair wager — our animal shelter is spotless,” he said.
The varsity game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Doghouse in New Albany.

The art walk runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and will begin at the Carnegie Center for Art and History, located at 201 E. Spring St. Along with artists, historians and community leaders will be on hand to discuss the themes as interpreted through the installations.
