NEW ALBANY —
When the Art Walk began on Saturday evening, people eagerly waited at the Carnegie Center for Art & History before the 6 p.m. start time.
“Things are going great and everyone is having a blast. People have been showing up eager,” said Karen Gillenwater, curator, Carnegie Center.
Last year the Art Walk — an event leading up to New Albany’s Bicentennial celebration in 2013 — attracted about 400 people, and Gillenwater expected more for 2012.
Artist Michael Wimmer said he was pleased with the crowd that checked out his Growth of Education exhibit located in front of the City-County Building.
“Everything is going well. We are having a lot of people go through, and the response has been great,” Wimmer said.
Wimmer said a lot of people asked about the numbers in his piece. He had all the numbers in New Albany’s zip code except the number five, but Wimmer admitted it was sheer luck that he used most of the numbers.
Because Wimmer’s piece is about education, there were representatives from New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation, Community Montessori and the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library on hand. Participants got to learn about education options and sign up for a library card.
Nathan Smith’s Micro Park was a popular spot, especially with the herbs and plants now in place in the interactive exhibit. Laura Wilkins, director of marketing and outreach, pointed out that it’s somewhat of a community garden where people are welcome to herbs such as rosemary if needed. Representatives from the Southern Indiana Botanical Society distributed information about gardening, and people were encouraged to gather information about the YMCA and the New Albany Floyd County Parks and Recreation Department.
“I think it’s going great. I’m pleased with the number of people and everyone loves the screen printing. We are definitely pleased that everyone is having a good time,” Wilkins said.
Artist Jacob Stanley was very pleased with the Art Walk and the questions asked about his piece “Sweat Equity.”
“I’m very impressed with the people of New Albany, and the level of discourse. The people really asked engaging questions,” Stanley said.
Stanley describes his work as “challenging and engaging with aesthetic elements.”
The artwork from 2011 was also included in the Art Walk. Scott Scarboro explained that his “Time Ghost Tower-Casts” is the only solar powered radio station in the world.
Of course, the Art Walk will occur again next year and hopefully generate more attention to art.
“I think this is wonderful,” said Mayor Jeff Gahan. “I like all of the pieces and I hope they are not in a hurry to move it. I think this is a great project and I would like to see more art.”
The public art pieces will be on display for at least two years. For more information, visit www.napublicart.org or “like” the New Albany Public Art page on Facebook.
