JEFFERSONVILLE —
Visitors to Jeffersonville’s Victorian Chautauqua — set for this weekend at the Howard Steamboat Museum — will get a first look at a recently built replica steamboat pilothouse.
The pilothouse is one of the key improvements museum officials are looking to show off during this year’s event. A Chautauqua is an annual educational meeting — originating in Lake Chautauqua, N.Y. in 1874 — featuring public lectures, concerts and dramatic performances. The festival has been on the grounds of the steamboat museum, at 1101 E. Market St., for the last 20 years. Events go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Admission is $4 for adults; children younger than 12 are free with an adult.
“Who would have thought — it just keeps plugging along,” museum administrator Yvonne Knight said of the festival.
Part of the event’s success is due to the fact that it hasn’t become overgrown during the last two decades, she said. Further, exhibitors and entertainment are always well received.
Those who haven’t been in a while will notice a few improvements around the museum, thanks to a recent capital campaign which raised $1 million. That effort helped the museum pay for a climate-control system, storage space and various restorations around the grounds.
“They’re going to realize, ‘oh my it’s not 110 degrees’” inside the Howard mansion, she said.
Another noticeable change will be a recently restored chandelier in the museum’s library.
“It’s a ‘wow’ moment” when people see it, she said.
Outside the museum, the recently restored laundry house and pilothouse will get visitors’ attention. The pilothouse — the inspiration behind this year’s theme “Pilothouse Pass-Times” — was built in the fall to replicate a design made famous on steamboats built by the Howards. The 10-foot by 10-foot structure is dedicated to the memory of Rosemary Prentice, who established the Jeff-Clark Preservation organization in the late 1960s, Knight said.
Elsewhere on the grounds, vendors will have booths set up, food and drinks will be served and book signings are planned. Knight said the festival’s annual large herb and perennial sales are always big draws for visitors.
The festival is a fundraiser for the museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the steamboat-building Howard family’s legacy and the history of the Great Steamboat Era. For more information, visit steamboatmuseum.org.
