NEW ALBANY —
Instead of focusing on what it can do for students, this year’s fundraiser for the New Albany-Floyd County Education Foundation is fixed on why it raises money for students. And a rising Hollywood star and New Albany High School graduate will help the group out.
Tyler Bliss, executive director for the foundation, said this year’s Education Celebration will showcase performances from students and the accomplishments of the schools.
“The only people we benefit are the schools, the teachers and the students, so we really wanted to make it about that,” Bliss said. “By featuring some of the initiatives of the foundation, we’re really showcasing the schools.”
Another performer will be a centerpiece as well. One of the items up for auction is a dinner for eight with Josh Dallas, a New Albany High School graduate who has gone on to star in the summer blockbuster “Thor” and the hit television series, “Once Upon a Time.”
Bliss said last year’s dressy event at Huber’s Plantation Hall was flashy and dressy. This time around, he said the foundation wanted to let the community kick back in business casual wear and get a good look at what the foundation does.
“Calling it a gala [last year] and putting this air of formality forward didn’t fit with the mission of the foundation, which is connecting with our kids,” he said.
He said he also wants the event to educate the community about some of the initiatives the foundation helps fund for NA-FC schools, including the Imagination Library, Great Classrooms Grants for teachers, technology in classrooms and Junior Achievement for fifth- and eighth-graders.
Bliss said he hopes the Education Celebration will raise about $50,000. He said that’s why some big ticket items are featured in the live auction, including dinner with Dallas.
But Bliss said a week-long vacation in a beach-front condo in Destin, Fla., tickets to see Jimmy Buffett at the KFC Yum! Center and an African Safari for two are also included in the live auction. Bliss said while some of the auction items are enticing, he really wants the community to show support for its schools.
“We really want to encourage people to come out,” Bliss said. “If you have an interest in public education and our schools, this is a great opportunity to come out and show your support for the schools.”
