CHARLESTOWN —
After being closed to the public while Rose Island was part of the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, Rose Island is now part of the Charlestown State Park and open to the public.
In fact, an historic iron bridge spans Fourteen Mile Creek allowing easy access to the site. There is just one problem: In order to get there, you have to walk down a big hill, and in order to leave you have to walk back up again as vehicles are not allowed. This has made the site inaccessible for a lot of people.
Until now.
The Charlestown Chamber of Commerce has teamed with Charlestown State Park and Historic Tunnel Mill and the John Work House to provide a day of special access to both sites, with transportation provided to and from Rose Island from a parking lot at Charlestown State Park.
Visitors can leave their cars at the park and board a bus. Ride to Rose Island and walk around, then board a bus for the return to the parking lot. Patrons can explore the walking trails and other features of Charlestown State Park and then drive to the nearby John Work House (maps will be provided) for a special lunch of pulled pork barbecue from a roasting pig (while supplies last) or chili and hot dogs. Tour the John Work House and visit with re-enactors at the site.
This special day of access and events will take place Oct. 20. Tickets are available at the Charlestown Library and are priced at $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 65 and older or children 10 and under.
This includes admission to both sites, parking at both locations, transportation to Rose Island and lunch. Buses will take people to Rose Island every half hour from 9 a.m. until noon, and a limited number of seats are available.
