NEW ALBANY —
A taste of New Albany’s history will be on tap Sunday for the annual Floyd County Historical Society Ladies Auxiliary Brunch at the Padgett Museum.
The event was pushed back to May this year in hopes that the weather would be nice, as there will be several exhibits and tents set up inside as well as outside the Padgett Museum, which is located at 509 W. Market St.
Guests will be entertained with re-enactments and living history performances detailing some of the city’s most notable residents. With a Civil War exhibit on display on the second floor of the museum, several of the re-enactments will center around New Albany’s place in the war.
“New Albany was the location of three of the most important Civil War regiments — the 38th, the 23rd and the 81st,” said Floyd County Historical Society member Alice Glover, who has again helped organize the annual brunch.
“We have a lot of Civil War history, and a lot to be proud of.”
Author Judith C. Owens-Lalude will not only be present at the brunch to discuss her work “The Long Walk — Slavery to Freedom,” but she will also portray the character Clarissa from the book.
From freed slaves to doctors and politicians, Glover said there will be several actors on hand for the event portraying famous people with ties to the area.
“New Albany has been so famous for so many things as a result of the quality of the people that stopped here,” Glover said.
The cost to attend the brunch — which will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — is $15 per person, and the meal will be prepared by Patticakes and Pies catering. Reservations aren’t necessary, and the proceeds will benefit the Padgett Museum.
“We have this brunch to help keep the museum open,” said Marilyn Peel, president of the ladies auxiliary club.
The museum is a vital resource for educating the public on New Albany’s past, she said.
“The exhibits are New Albany history, from the time it was founded particularly up until about 1937,” Peel said.
In honor of the city’s 200th birthday in 2013, the museum is expected to replace the second floor Civil War exhibit with a New Albany bicentennial showcase this year.
The New Albany Bicentennial Living History Committee will also be taking part in the Sunday brunch by organizing a “walking informative” style show during the event.
The brunch will also serve as an informal kick-off for Preservation Month, which extends through May.
