SELLERSBURG —
Floating through the air, disappearing suddenly and reappearing elsewhere, Silver Creek Theatre’s next production casts a new light on Wonderland.
Silver Creek High School’s production of “Alice” opens tonight at 7:30. The show is part of a nationwide debut through Project CenterStage 2012 with about 30 other schools across the country.
But Nathan Shewell, director, said the audience will get a completely different experience of the stories from Disney and books they’re used to reading. The entire show is illuminated with black lights.
“It’s going to create that surrealism with the black light because you have an opportunity to make things happen that normally can’t,” Shewell said. “Things can float or disappear ... so this Wonderland will be very strange.”
He said the show uses a lot of masks and black light reactive paint on costumes and the faces of actors.
Hannah Grimes, a sophomore who plays Alice, said she thinks the show will surprise the audience in a lot of ways.
“It’s not scary, but a darker side of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ than the Disney adaptations,” Grimes said. “I think it’s a cool experience for kids to see because it’s a shorter show, but it’s very creative.”
Lindsay Miller, a junior who plays the Queen of Hearts, said some of the effects students use in the play — such as disappearing characters and scenery — bring the story of “Alice in Wonderland” to a different level on stage.
“I think they’ll see all the possibilities of Wonderland,” Miller said. “It’s not just another world, it’s a place where anything can happen.”
