Veterans parade planned for New Albany on Wednesday

Free event ends with fireworks, softball game at Joe Kraft Park

NEW ALBANY — A parade and ceremony to honor military veterans will proceed from the PC Home Center off Cherry Street to Joe Kraft Park off West Seventh Street in New Albany on Independence Day.

The parade is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, and will include local veterans groups and posts as well as New Albany police vehicles and an antique fire engine according to Dan Coffey, a city councilman and one of the organizers of the event.

He said he was assured the necessary street closures would be OK’d today by the New Albany Board of Public Works and Safety for the event. The parade is expected to last about 45 minutes, and will be followed with a program at 5:15 p.m. where veterans will take turns reading the names of those who have died or went missing during wars.

“This is really geared toward honoring our vets and our country,” Coffey said.

He credited several local veteran’s groups for helping to organize the event.

The Sellersburg Post Honor Guard will perform after the reading of the names of those who died, then there’s a softball game featuring residents, police officers and firefighters slated for 6:30 p.m. at the park.

There will be live music followed by fireworks at 9:45 p.m.. Those who attend are asked to bring a lawn chair and blanket and a picnic meal. For more information, call Coffey at 812-949-1262.

As the city of New Albany is hosting its Independence Day festival tonight, Wednesday’s parade won’t overlap the event.
