JEFFERSONVILLE —
The Rose Hill Neighborhood Association, which represents parts of the downtown area, recently installed new signs commemorating the January 1937 flood.
Two signs, an aerial photo of downtown during the flood and a high-water mark, were placed on the north side of the Perkfection building, near the corner of Maple Street and Spring Street.
The building was chosen because of its location and because it can be seen from the 1937 aerial photograph, said Kate Miller, association president. The photo shows Court Avenue, Spring Street and other local landmarks under the flood water.
“Our downtown area has come a long way and has changed drastically over the years,” Miller said. “We have survived flooding of epic proportions and we have survived the addition of an interstate highway.”
• Additionally, the association is working on a new program that identifies homes that have been standing downtown for more than a century. The group recently went door to door with applications and drawings for its Century Home plaques. More than 20 homeowners applied to receive the plaques.
