NEW ALBANY —
Contests, smart phone applications and a little competition might help teenagers learn a thing or two about driving a little safer.
Theresa Lamb, a State Farm Insurance agent in New Albany, will host Celebrate My Drive at 11 a.m. Saturday at Floyd Central High School.
Lamb said aside from games, food and fun activities, students can learn a variety of safe driving lessons that might even help them save money on their car insurance.
But she said more importantly, she hopes they learn lessons that can save their lives.
“The thing for me is that car crashes are more common with teens, and the likelihood of them dying is higher in their first year of driving,” Lamb said.
But the school is also enrolled in a competition against the other schools in the country having the same event. If victorious, Floyd Central will win a $100,000 grant. A student from the school can also win a Chevrolet Sonic LS.
But she said the event will teach them about avoiding distracted driving, like texting while driving, but also teach them how their smart phone can help lower their car insurance rates.
Jimmy Corolis, an authorized service technician with a Sprint store in New Albany, said State Farm’s Driver Feedback app can monitor a student’s speed, how fast they’re taking turns or how hard they’re braking to score them on how safely they’re driving.
“It scores your driving and by using it, it impacts your bottom line on your insurance,” Corolis said. “Not only is it good for the younger students to use, but it’s good for parents to gauge how their children are driving.”
Lamb said she thought integrating technology with driving might keep students more aware of how they’re driving.
“With the way technology is going these days, everybody’s all about texting and driving, which is really bad,” Lamb said. “They’re about quick, fast technology. We know they’re going to use it, but the more we can educate about why you shouldn’t and why you should be careful on the road is a passion of mine.”
Other student organizations can compete for money up to $500 and a $2,500 grant was written by Lamb for the school to fund its after prom party.
Pizza will be served by Papa John’s and popcorn will be provided by The Great Escape Theater.
