Sipes’ court bill passes through committee

The Senate Judiciary committee approved legislation authored by State Sen. Connie Sipes (D-New Albany) that would redistribute the Floyd County Circuit Court’s caseload for better court efficiency.

Senate Bill SB 307 provides that in Floyd County, the Circuit Court would have exclusive jurisdiction over probate and trust matters. The bill also proposes that the Floyd Circuit Court and Floyd Superior Court No. 3 have concurrent juvenile jurisdiction.

The bill would permit juvenile cases, which comprise 22 percent of the Circuit Court’s workload, to be shared between the two courts.

“The judges in Floyd County were concerned that the juvenile caseload had become so large there was a need to share the workload,” Sipes said. “It is my hope that this increases efficiency and ensures a speedy process for every case.”

Floyd County Circuit Judge J. Terrence Cody said that if passed, SB 307 would give immediate help to courts. Cody said the delinquency docket would move in a more efficient manner, and the bill would result in a more unified court system.

NAHS Hall of Fame accepting nominations

The New Albany High School Hall of Fame is accepting applications for the class of 2010. Any alumni or friend of New Albany High School may submit applications.

Nominees can include graduates who have demonstrated success in academics, athletics, leadership or other areas while enrolled at the school or after graduation. There is also a category for non-graduates who have made contributions to the school as a teacher, coach, administrator or member of the community.

Application forms may be obtained in the school office or by calling John Willman at 812-923-8589. The application deadline for this year’s class in Feb. 28. Up to 12 people will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a banquet in September.

Horseshoe Foundation offering grants seminar

Charitable organizations which serve Floyd County and are interested in learning more about the Horseshoe Foundation grant application process are invited to attend one of two grants seminars from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 23, in the first floor multipurpose room at the Scribner Place YMCA, 33 State St., New Albany.

Participants may bring a brown bag meal. The grants seminars will include information about the grant process, how to make your proposal stand out, and pitfalls to avoid when submitting a grant application. Staff and grants committee members will be on hand to answer questions participants might have regarding the grant application process. Organizations that have never submitted an application to the Horseshoe Foundation and are interested in doing so this spring are encouraged to attend. Grant applications are now being accepted for the spring grants cycle. To be eligible to receive a grant, completed applications must be postmarked by March 31 and all previous final grant reports must be completed. Charitable organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies which benefit Floyd County citizens and fit the grant guidelines are welcome to apply. Grant program guidelines, policies and grant application forms are available on the Foundation’s Web site horseshoefoundation.org. Paper copies of the applications and annual reports are available at the Carnegie Center for Art and History, the Floyd County Library, and the Horseshoe Foundation’s 3rd floor Office at the Scribner Place YMCA. It is recommended that all potential applicants download or obtain new copies of the grant application packages at any of these locations since some changes have been made to the process.

The seminars are free and open to the public, but registration is requested to ensure enough materials are available.

K of C hosts Texas Hold’Em tourney

Knights of Columbus Riding team will host a Ride to conquer Cancer Texas Hold’Em Tournament with dealing beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 27 at 809 East Main St., New Albany.

Doors open at 4 p.m. Proceeds from buy backs and add on go to benefit Ride to Conquer Cancer. Eight places will be paid if there is a minimum of 64 players.
