NEW ALBANY —
A 26-year-old New Albany man was arrested just before midnight Thursday on a felony warrant issued for his arrest in October 2009, according to a New Albany Police Department press release.
Richard Denton Needham III was taken into custody at State and Market streets after the car he was driving was stopped by police for driving the wrong way on East Spring Street in downtown New Albany.
Needham, who lives in the 1300 block of Dent Drive, was arrested in August 2006 for shoplifting at Kroger in the New Albany Plaza. He has since failed to appear in court to answer the charge of theft, a class D felony that was filed in connection with that incident.
Needham III was booked into the Floyd County Jail where he will await further disposition in Floyd County Circuit Court.
Couple arrested on Grant Line Road
An Indiana State Trooper arrested two people following a traffic stop at the corner Grant Line Road and Mount Tabor Road around 2:30 a.m. Friday.
Arrested were Russell L. Smith Jr., 29, of Jeffersonville, and Christal M. Conley, 25, of New Albany.
According to a press release, as the trooper approached the vehicle, he noticed Smith allegedly pull a handgun from his pants and place it next to his leg. The trooper stated that Smith was intoxicated and did not have a permit for the handgun.
Conley, the driver of the vehicle, was also charged with driving while intoxicated with a prior. Both were taken to the Floyd County Jail.
Sobriety checkpoint, saturation patrol results released
Sgt. Timothy Dossett of the Indiana State Police Post in Sellersburg has released results from the sobriety checkpoint and saturation patrols held on St. Patrick’s Day evening by troopers and officers with the Floyd County Police Department.
The roadblock was held in Floyd County and the saturation patrols were held in Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties.
At the Floyd County checkpoint, 112 vehicles were checked and there was only one drunk driving arrest. Officers did have 29 traffic arrests and warnings.
At the saturation patrols, there were 55 arrests and 82 warnings issued along with five drunk driving arrests and five criminal arrests.
The Indiana State Police will continue both saturation patrols and checkpoints throughout the year.
