Health Initiative hitting barbershops

The Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males has announced the 2012 Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative, a statewide endeavor to educate males, particularly black males, about the importance of regular testing and disease prevention.

Clark and Floyd County health screening events are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at:

• Nu-Look Barbershop, 1626 Spring St., Jeffersonville

• DeeJays Cutting Edge, 1302 State St., New Albany.

The Jeffersonville and New Albany health screening events are sponsored by Jeffersonville Commission on The Social Status of Black Males, Community Action of Southern Indiana, Clark Memorial Hospital, Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services, Global Interventions Ventures In Education and Wesley United Methodist Church.



NEW WASHINGTON

Supper and auction set

New Washington Masonic Lodge 167 will sponsor a breakfast supper and basket auction from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Masonic Lodge, New Washington. The basket auction will begin at 7 p.m.

A $5 donation is requested for the breakfast supper.



JEFFERSONVILLE

Sugar Maples celebrating anniversary

Sugar Maples, 109 W. Maple St., Jeffersonville, will sponsor an open house in celebration of the sixth anniversary of the business from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, April 27.



UTICA

Fifth Sunday event coming up

Utica-area churches’ annual fifth Sunday singing will be at 6 p.m., Sunday, April 29, at the Utica Baptist Church.

All are invited to attend and participate. A fellowship time will follow the singing.



Cemetery group raising funds

The Utica Hillcrest Cemetery Association’s annual spring fundraiser — a chicken and dumpling dinner and silent auction — will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, April 29, at the Utica Community Center. The auction will begin at 2 p.m.

The menu will be homemade chicken and dumplings, green beans, roll, dessert and drink, $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Proceeds are used for the upkeep of the cemetery.



NEW ALBANY

McFadden to perform at Silver Street

Nashville recording artist Darla McFadden will be appearing in concert at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, April 29, at Silver Street United Methodist Church in New Albany. The public is invited.

In her 23 years of ministry, McFadden has pursued her calling all over the United States. Her latest project “Crossroads” is packed with life-changing lyrics and has put her on the national charts. She was recently nominated for Gospel Music’s highest honor, the Dove Award.

Be Local Expo coming May 1

New Albany First will host a Be Local Expo from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 1 at The Grand, 138 E. Market St., New Albany.

The event is open to the public. Booth rental is $50 for members [Develop New Albany or New Albany First] and $75 for nonmembers. Set-up begins at 2:30 p.m. and eight-foot tables will be available.

Lincoln Day dinner set

The Floyd County Lincoln Day Dinner will be at 6 p.m., Friday, April 27, at First Assembly of God Church,  2778 Charlestown Road, New Albany.

Congressman Todd Young will be the featured speaker. The cost this year will be the same as last year, $25 per person. Tables of eight will be available at a discounted rate of $185.

Wesley Chapel invites women to dinner

The annual Ladies’ Spring Dinner hosted by Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church circles will treat guests to a home-cooked meal, variety show and fellowship at 6:30 p.m. May 3.

The public is invited to make reservations for the event that will be at Grant Line United Methodist Church, 4810 Grant Line Road in New Albany across from the elementary school.
