A hog that was seriously injured after jumping from a moving trailer onto Interstate 265 Monday afternoon was shot and killed by police.
A transport trailer was traveling westbound when the animal jumped onto the interstate. When New Albany Police Department officers arrived on the scene at about 4:45 p.m., the animal’s owner was attempting to get the injured hog back into the trailer.
NAPD Capt. Keith Whitlow said it became obvious that the hog, which weighed at least 700 or 800 pounds, had injuries that were too serious for it to recover. Whitlow said the hog had a leg injury and possibly a broken back, so the decision was made to humanely destroy the animal at the scene.
The hog’s owner told police he would not be able to sell it, so the state highway department was called to remove it, Whitlow said.
Whitlow said police have had problems with horses running loose in the past, but said a hog jumping out of a trailer is a first.
Traffic was slowed for more than an hour, according to dispatchers.
