For the second time in less than a week, a man was arrested for failing to pay a taxi fare in New Albany.
Troy W. Varvel, 20, was arrested on a preliminary charge of class D felony theft for not paying a cab driver the $9 he owed him, according to a New Albany Police Department news release.
The cab driver told police that he picked Varvel up in the 600 block of Francis Drive in Clarksville and transported him to his apartment in the 1600 block of East Oak Street. He alleged the Varvel exited the taxi without paying.
Police followed footprints in the snow from the taxi cab to Varvel’s apartment. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Floyd County Jail.
James R. Jarboe, 52, was arrested by NAPD on Thursday after he allegedly refused to pay a $15.50 cab fare. Jarboe was charged with class D felony theft and class B misdemeanor public intoxication.
NAPD Capt. Keith Whitlow said that, prior to last week, he had never seen another case involving someone failing to pay a taxi fare.
Two arrested for cocaine possession in New Albany
Two New Albany residents were arrested Monday afternoon on felony drug charges following a traffic stop.
Ricky Stephen Robb, 42, of the 300 block of Marianna Drive, and Patricia G. Glass, 29, of Ivy Court, were stopped at about 3:30 p.m. after an NAPD officer observed a pickup truck being operated by Robb on Pearl Street with an expired license plate.
Robb reportedly gave officers a false name after being stopped. The officer then found drug paraphernalia inside the truck, according to a NAPD news release.
Further investigation revealed cocaine inside the vehicle that was linked to both occupants, and the drugs were seized by police.
Robb was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of cocaine, a class D felony, possession of paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor, false informing, a class B misdemeanor, and being a habitual traffic violator, a class C felony.
Glass faces charges of possession of cocaine, a class D felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor.
Glass and Robb are both being held in the Floyd County Jail awaiting an initial hearing.
New Albany man charged with marijuana possession
A 51-year-old New Albany man was arrested Monday for felony marijuana possession following an investigation into a domestic dispute at his home, according to a NAPD news release.
NAPD officers were called to the 1400 block of East Oak Street to the residence of James Lee Broy following a report of a domestic dispute between Broy and his ex-wife.
Officers found Broy with a marijuana cigarette. He was taken to the Floyd County Jail, and during the booking process, officers found more marijuana in the man’s possession.
Broy has a prior marijuana conviction, which enhances the charge to a felony. He also has pending drug charges in Floyd County.
He is being held in the Floyd County Jail awaiting an initial hearing.
Man arrested for violating protective order
A 44-year-old New Albany man arrested last month for battering a 36-year-old woman was arrested Sunday morning for violating an order of protection on the woman’s behalf, according to a NAPD news release.
Raymond S. Shirley, who stated he lives in the city at-large, was arrested inside the woman’s home in the 200 block of East 13th Street shortly before 4 a.m. on Sunday.
He was charged with invasion of privacy, a class B misdemeanor, for violating the protective order that was served on him in January while he was an inmate in the Floyd County Jail.
Police officers were called to the woman’s home Sunday to investigate a domestic disturbance. He was booked into the Floyd County Jail.
Shirley had been arrested Jan. 22 on preliminary charges of strangulation, battery and criminal confinement, but was later charged with class A misdemeanor domestic battery.
