The Floyd County office of the Purdue Extension Service will hold the 2013 Master Gardener training series beginning Jan. 7 continuing every Monday through March 25. There classes will meet each Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Clark County REMC in Sellersburg.
An orientation session will be held on Monday, Dec. 3, at the Clark County REMC from 1 to 4 p.m. The purpose of this session is to provide an introduction to the Master Gardener Training Program and to discuss extension resources.
This program will increase knowledge and understanding of varied horticultural topics such as growing flowers and vegetables, lawn and houseplant care, plant disease and insect pest identification, control, and more. Instructors are extension professionals and other experts.
To become a Purdue Master Gardener, participants must attend all of the training sessions, pass an examination and volunteer horticultural service back to the community through programs approved by the extension office. Such service could include teaching, planting and maintaining demonstration gardens, answering gardening questions from the public, or judging flower and vegetable projects at the county fair.
Training class size is limited and is first-come, first-serve based on receipt of a completed application and a deposit. Those accepted into the 2013 training class must pay a materials fee of $130 and a $25 deposit. The deposit will be refundable upon your completion of the volunteer hours commitment. Completed applications must be received no later than Friday, Nov. 30.
