Sunnyside Solos host open house
The Sunnyside Solos Square Dance Club will be hosting an open house from 8 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 20, at Grant Line United Methodist Church. The church is located at 4810 Grant Line Road in New Albany. Anyone interested in learning to square dance is encouraged to attend. Classes will begin in early September. Refreshments will be served. Miss Harvest Homecoming pageant looking for contestants
Harvest Homecoming is looking for its Miss Harvest Homecoming and Miss HHC Outstanding Teen. Young women between the ages of 13 and 24 are invited to participate in the pageants, which will be 7 p.m. on Aug. 21, at Highland Hills Middle School.
Miss Harvest Homecoming and the Outstanding Teen will represent southern Indiana at the Miss Indiana competition in June 2011. Miss Indiana goes on to compete in the Miss America pageant. The queens will also reign over this year’s Harvest Homecoming festival in October. The Miss America program is a great provider of scholarships at the national, state and local levels.
Contestants compete in the areas of interview, talent, evening gown, activewear [Outstanding Teen] or swimsuit [Miss HHC] and an on stage question. Contestants must reside in Floyd, Clark, Harrison, Washington or Scott counties.

Chuck’s Kiwanis 5K/4K Challenge
Chuck’s Kiwanis 5K-Men/4K-Women Challenge will begin with registration at 7 a.m. and the race at 8 a.m. Aug. 14 at Sam Peden Community Park, Grant Line Road, New Albany.
Walkers are welcome. There is a single race for both men and women with awards for the top 100 Overall runners. Runners will start together, with women turning for finish after two miles. Proceeds benefit the Kiwanis work with underprivileged youth and senior citizens. Entry forms are available at Republic Bank.
Entry fees, prior to Aug. 10 are $20 to include a Dry Fit shirt or $8 without a shirt; after Aug. 10, $25 with Dry Fit shirt, or $10 without shirt.

Pack the Bus to collect school supplies
The City of New Albany, Interfaith Community Council, Salvation Army and other area businesses and organizations are collecting school supplies for needy children during its “Pack the Bus” drive from now until Aug. 1.
This community-wide event will meet the needs of more than 3,600 children in grades K-8 who need help to start school with the supplies they need. Supply lists can be found at the website, packthebus.com. Supply lists are specific as to items and grade level and need to be packed into a soft, collapsible backpack that will fit into a locker, with no wheels or handles. Organizers ask that only items and quantities on the list be in the backpack in order to be fair to each recipient and any items purchased in addition to those listed be donated in a bag, separately from the backpack. Spring St., New Albany, from 9 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday; Culbertson Baptist Church at 4007 Grant Line Road, New Albany; First Harrison Bank locations at 5100 Highway 64, Georgetown, 5609 Williamsburg Station Road, Floyds Knobs, 9849 U.S. 150, Greenville, and at 4303 Charlestown Crossing and 3131 Grant Line Road, New Albany; In Heaven's Eyes Ministry, 129 W.
