NEW ALBANY — Two pit bull dogs invaded a New Albany home Monday afternoon after attacking the resident’s pet Golden Retriever, according to a New Albany Police Department report.

A 53-year-old man living in the 1900 block of Culbertson Avenue told police he was in the shower when he heard his wife screaming for help. He said he grabbed his handgun and fired several shots at the dogs, killing one of them, according to NAPD Capt. Keith Whitlow.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 5:40 p.m. as neighbors called to report gunfire.

Whitlow said the pit bulls began attacking the Golden Retriever in its back yard. The owner of the Retriever was able to bring her dog inside the home, and the two attacking dogs followed her inside. Both pit bulls then left the house, but one tried to aggressively re-enter and was shot and killed by the woman’s husband while it was still in the back yard.

Albert Cross, 40, who also lives in the 1900 block of Culbertson Avenue, was identified as the owner of the pit bulls. He provided the investigating officer with veterinary documents indicating vaccinations were current.

According to the report, Cross offered to pay veterinary fees for the Golden Retriever, which suffered a laceration to its neck during the attack.

No people were injured in the incident.

So far, no charges have been filed against Cross, police say.
